Miller Chairman Board of Cemetery Trustees Town hall neadini;,idass . 01867 Dear Mrs. :filler, Some time ago you asked if we would share with your Board any information we might have regarding available and suitable sites for use as a demetery. Even though no requirements or guidelines were given, it would appear that some criteria should be considered, which might include the following, for Town owned properties. 1. A minimum size of approximately ;jvt acres. 2. Land should be reasonably dry to a certain elevation. 3. iv''ot in the Aquifer Protection District. 4. Not in a restricted area and under management and control of another department or the T own , such as: I. Mater Department. II. School Department. III. Conservation Commission. IV. Recreation Committee. V. Municipal Light Department. The sites meeting these criteria owned by the Town could include the following: 1. Batchelder property. 2. Bear Hill, former Nike Site. 3. Balance of acreage of Haverhill Street Nike Site after the area which has been leased to the ' heading lee Area Authority , Inc. has been deducted. :ine batchelaer property was discussed under Article 18 at the Subsequent Town ;fleeting in Nnvember 1992, but the motion was either postponed or tabled. There are tiros and cons when considering the Bear Hill, and Haverhill Street Nike Site Then there are other parcels privately owned, which might be suitable, if the owners would be willing to sell at an economical price, and if zoning and other restrictions could be resolved. Also, there miF,ht be some advantages and disadvantages for each of the following: 2. 1. The so-called Longwood Poultry Farm on West Street. Some years ago Eduard Callan purchased land in 71oburn from the Johnson family, and he stated at that time he had an agreement for the refusal offer of the remaining land in Reading, when the time came. To mention was made if this was verbal, or in writi.n6. Later, of course, tree title to i:allan's land has been transferred, and who znovis if tzuis agreement with the Johnson family now has a legal basis. These lots show on Assessors' Plats 58, 80 and 96. 2. Several parties o,77 property off West Street and County Road that have land in the rear of their property, which is vacant. It is questionable if' any, or all of them, would be willing to sell their rear land. The total acreage of these various lots is considerable. They include the following Plats and Lots as shown below: Plat 22 Lots 2 and 3 9 and 4 7 an d 8 Plat 29 Lot 37 3. A max6inal and expensive lot is shown on Salem Street on Assessors' Plat 92 as Lot 14. 4. A lot containing 7.925 acres is shown on Assessors' Plat 181 as Lot 6. This is reached by Ashley Place from the Fairwood development. This is ripe for development, and would carry a high price. 5. Land off VanNorden Road which appears as the rear parts of property of various owners, as shown on Assessors' Plats 155 and 156. There would be drainage problems, and probably would be expensive even if all the neighbors would agree to sell. 6. Land off Lon 6vieva .~oad is shown on assessors' flat 69 as :got 20. The whole lot chains 6.52 acres, but there is considerable-open land behind the residence. 3. There are enclosures 1.chich will shove where these parcels are located, and the restricted area of the Aquifer Protection District . If you Tnould like further information about any of these parcels, or other lots, please le t us know. 6incerely, LAND BANK C SIT TFI; .enclosures: Copies of Assessors Plats: 58, 80 and 96 22 and 29 92 181 155 and 156 69 ropy of aquifer rrotection District, as delineated on the Zoning Plain, which is on Pa6e 18 of the Res.din6 Conservation Plan 1976. oa Re e~ ro y ~ o D M ds.
