Senior Center - Pearl Street School
June 12, 1989
Present: Lois Bond, Gladys Cail, Barbara Doucette, Dorothy
Foxon, Ginny Lane, Linda Nordberg, Barbara Ritchie,
Loretta Spaulding
Absent: Frank Day, Irving Stackpole, Ruth Vitkovich
Meeting was called to order at 5:48 P.M. by Chairperson GFladys
Cail at the Senior Center, Pearl Street School.
Minutes of the May meeting were accepted on a motion by Barbara
Doucette and seconded by Ginny Lane.
The Treasurer's Report was accepted. Seventy-four percent of a
projected ninety-one point six (91.6) percent of the budget to
date has been spent.
Director's Report
Lois handed out the May financial report.
Lois recently attended both the Governor's Conference and Legis-
lative Breakfast whereby she reported that there is competition
between elders and children for same dollars.
Reading Municipal Electric Company will include a Heat Stress
brochure with the August billing.
Old Business
Linda Nordberg reported on the May meeting of the Senior Center
Location Study. The question was asked of the Board of Selectmen
as to whether the fire station is structurally sound. Tony Flet-
cher is unable to do a thorough check at this time of the fire
station due to renovations at the Town Hall and Annex. Board of
Selectmen would like to know senior center Location Committee's
next choice if fire station is not accepted. This study is on
hold for now.
Survey - Dorothy Foxon suggested that the seniors have an infor-
mational brainstorming session at a social to find out if their
needs are being met and that outreach workers can question the at
home seniors. It was felt by the Board committee that these ap-
proaches, as well as having open houses would be less threatening
to the seniors in getting input rather than have a written survey
to be filled out which many seniors would put in their drawer and
forget about.
Surplus food distribution has been scheduled for September 21,
1989.
New Business
Rather than have the Elderberries brochure published and dis-
tributed on an annual basis, the Board Committee discussed the
possibility of publishing a quarterly newsletter which would
provide more up-to-date information. It was suggested that a
list of sponsoring patrons could be inserted in the newsletter;
ask for a $3.00 donation per subscriber and have high school or
such publish it to keep cost down.
It was moved by Linda Nordberg and seconded by Gladys Cail to
publicize ahead of time in the newspaper and quarterly newsletter
the fall schedule for classes including program dates and costs
which would be discounted if classes were prepaid.
Applications were received by Diane Guilfoyle and Mary Andreola
to serve on board of Elder Services. A Nominating Committee was
formed to bring in names for July meeting. This committee will
be chaired by Linda Nordberg and include Ginny Lane and Barbara
Ritchie.
Arnold Berger and Carl Amon will serve on the Council on Aging
van committee. Board members are Frank Day, Irving Stackpole and
Ginny Lane.
Meeting was adjourned at 7:33 P.M. which was moved by Linda
Nordberg and seconded by Loretta Spaulding.
