HomeMy WebLinkAbout1984-05-14 Council on Aging MinutesCOUNCIL ON AGING Secretary's Report May 14, 1984 Present: Administrative Secretary, Rheta McKinley, Chairperson, Lorna Knapp; members, Dick Felone, Marcia McFarland, John MacDonnell, B. Knox, M. Ottino, Corrine Pecoraro, and Sebastian Tine; Finance Committeeman, Bill Hughes. Absent: Lester Ralph and Frank Lemaire The meeting was called to order at 7:35 by Chairperson Knapp. SECRETARY's REPORT Chairperson Knapp asked for comments on the previous month's secretary's report. Corinne stated that she had abstained from voting on the motion under New Business re the status of Rheta McKinley and that this had not been acknowledged. She asked that this abstention be recorded. After a brief discussion the motion was duly made, seconded and VOTED that the minutes of the previous meeting be accepted as submitted. TREASURER's REPORT Sebastian reported as of 4/30/84 the general fund had a balance of $13,144.16. Expenditures amounted to $41,434.84 which represents 75.92% for the year, which is ahead of target. The Board discussed the need for new typewriters in the Council office. The Board discussed the donation of $5,000. from the Patrons of Older Adults, and $1,000. from the Wakefield Elks toward the purchase of a new van. MYSTIC VALLEY ELDERLY SERVICES, INC. In the absence of Frank Lemaire, Lorna gave a report of the Director's Meeting of the above organization. She stated a new program is being intro- duced called "Community Care Consortium" designed for the frail elderly. The method of payment has not been finalized. The Board discussed the picnic held earlier in the day. It was a definite success and Rheta credited the volunteers and Board of Public Works for their help. NEW BUSINESS After discussion, the following programs were decided on: 7/11 Wednesday Cookout Tannerville Betty Knox, J.MacDonnell 7/25 to Block Dance Cedar Glen Marcia and Sebastian 8/8 it Bingo Tannerville Mary Ottino 8/22 Slide Presentation Peter Sanborn Corinne Pecoraro Council on Aging -2- May 14, 1984 Sebastian agreed to ask the Silvertones if they are available to play at Cedar Glen on 7/25. It was later decided to contact the Wakefield Retired Men's Band as to their availability. It was suggested that the Patrons for Older Adults be asked to fund the cookout. GRANT The motion was duly made, seconded and VOTED that the Board empower Rheta "to apply to the Mystic Valley Elder Affairs, Inc. for $5,000. toward the purchase of a 15-passenger van for the Reading Council on Aging." CLASSES FOR 1984-85 Rheta stated that all the Council's classes for this year have ended. The Board was furnished with a compilation of the classes and the number of attendees. Also included was a list of moneys returned to the Town from class fees and van transportation. There was a general discussion regard- ing suggestions for new courses for next Fall. It was suggested that some of the classes be consolidated, and that the library group meet in the. library in the future. Subject was tabled for consideration next meeting. OTHER BUSINESS In compliance with the vote passed last meeting, Chairperson Knapp reported she had written a letter to the Selectperson O'Brien, with copy to Molly Ziegler, re the upgrade of classification, hours and salary of Rheta McKinley. Lorna received a telephone call from Molly on the-night of the meeting advising her that the Selectmen cannot act on the request as it must go through the Personnel Board. Rheta advised the Board that she has set up a program entitled "How to Plan your•own'Funeral" to be presented by the New England Funeral Association. This is scheduled for June 6 at 10:30.
