Secretary's Report
Present: Administrative Secretary Rheta McKinley, Betty Knox, Dick Felone, Marcia
McFarland, John MacDonnell, Mary Ottino, Corinne Pecoraro, Sebastian Tine, and
Bill Hughes from the Fincom.
Absent: Chairperson Lorna Knapp, Lester Ralph, and Associate Member Frank
Lemaire.
The regular monthly meeting of the Council on Aging met on Monday evening,
March 12, 1984.
The meeting was called to order at 7:35 by Acting Chairperson Betty Knox. The
Secretary's Report was reviewed. The motion was duly made, seconded and VOTED
to accept the report as submitted.
Treasurer Tine reported as of February 27 the general fund expenditures amounted
to $32,847.27 which is 60.18% of budget. The balance is $21,731.73. At the
2/3 point of the year we are about 6% ahead. In general, the budget is very
sound. John MacDonnell suggested any surpluses could go toward the van fund.
Bill Hughes said if we have any money left over we should spend it.
ADMINISTRATIVE SECRETARY'S REPORT
This report was reviewed and commented on. The last item under "Donations"
was met with much enthusiasm. The very generous and surprising gift of a new
piano was received from Wendell Newell, a regular at the meal site lunches. The
Board was most appreciative as the need for a piano was second on the list of
high priced necessities, number one being a new van. The fact that the piano
was paid for and presented to the Board rather than.the money given negated the
need to go through the Town.
Rheta reported on her very frustrating meeting with Donna Barat Tucker held
earlier this evening. It was the Board's understanding that Donna would get
in touch with Dick Felone and Rheta and they would work together to set up
programs. Dick reported that he made every attempt to contact her and found it
impossible to do so. She never returned his calls, nor responded to his
messages on her answering machine. The only call she made to Dick was irrelevant
to the Boards program and concerned commercial television. Rheta stated that it
all has been taken out of the Board's hands and Donna has planned the programs
and chosen her own hosts. None of the subjects prepared would have been the
Board's choice, such as geriatric daycare and the outreach program.
VOLUNTEER TEA - May 6-13 is Volunteer Week; it is also Senior Center Week.
After discussion the date of Tuesday, May 8 from 2-4 was chosen for the Tea. It
will be catered and entertainment provided. Rheta requested as many of the Board
members as possible attend. It will be by invitation only and cost approximately
- $100. The motion was duly made, seconded and VOTED that the Board provide the
funds for the Volunteer Tea.
Council on Aging -2- March 12, 1984
PIANO DEDICATION
Plans were discussed for a dedication program for the piano. It was decided to
hold it at 11:00 o'clock on Wednesday, March 28. The Garden Club's program will
be ending at that time and the meal site people can be asked to arrive a little
early. Rheta will contact Aimee Lush and ask that she conduct a sing-along.
MAY EXHIBITION OF ARTICLES MADE IN COA's sponsored classes:
Plans for the arts and crafts exhibit were discussed. Rheta will contact the
Building Superintendent for permission to use the new meeting room. There was
a lengthy discussion as to the feasibility of allowing the exhibitors to sell
their products. It was stressed that only crafts that had been made at the senior
citizens' classes could be displayed. The motion was duly made, seconded and
VOTED that attendees of the classes could sell their wares if they so desired.
No specific dates were set.
PROGRAM FOR OLDER AMERICANS' MONTH.
Rheta asked for suggestions for May programs. The tradition of a May Party with-,_,a
May pole was discussed. The time of Tuesday, May 1 was agreed upon, and after
discussing the alternatives, the Community Center site was chosen. The Barrow's
School children will be asked to participate again. Lunch would be picnic-style
and the Wakefield Retired Mens' Band will be asked to play. It was decided to
purchase a cake from Ruth Decateur. The motion was duly made, seconded and VOTED
to acquire a take, by donation if possible, if not we'll pay for it.
The third week of May will feature the monthly Tea Dance on May 17.
For the last week of May Rheta suggested a program of gymnastics. She will con-
tact the high school and the instructor of the Senior Citizen exercise class.
FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION
Massbank has offered to sponsor a program on July 2. They will provide the
whole program including food and band. Different sites were discussed but not.-re-
solved. It was decided to contact the bank to determine if they had a location
in mind.
VAN GRANT
After much thought it was the opinion of Rheta McKinley and Chairperson Knapp
that the chances of receiving a van grant were poor as it would be necessary
to regionalize or go in with some other community. The chance of getting a
grant if you are a single agent is remote. A motion was duly made, seconded
and VOTED to forget about applying for a grant.
Council on Aging -3- March 12, 1984
OTHER BUSINESS
Rheta expressed a desire to buy a gift for Dick Rizzo and for Ruth Kilgore, who
have been doing income tax work with the elders for several weeks free of
charge. It was decided to purchase a variety of cheeses and charge it to the
Atlantic account
The motion was duly made, seconded and VOTED to adjourn at 9:20.
Next meeting will be 19, 1984.
Respectfully submitted,
