HomeMy WebLinkAbout1983-06-13 Council on Aging MinutesCOUNCIL GPI HIND SecretaryY's Report June 13, 1983 The regular monthly meeting of the Council on Aging was held on Monday, June 13, 1983, Attendees Rheta McKinley, Administrative Secretary; Chairperson Lorna, Knapp; members Dick Felone, Betty Knox, Mary Ctti.no, Sbbastian Tine, and Associate Member Frank Lema.ire. Guests William Hughes, Finance Committees and John MacBonnell, Marcia McFarland, Corrine Pecoraro, and S. Lester Ralph. Absents Donna, Ruth The meeting was called to order by Chairperson :snap at 7835e She welcomed four new members--to-bee John MacBonnell, Marcia McFarland, Corrine Pecoraro and S. Tester Ralph. She explained that they would receive a letter from the Selectmen's Office asking them to appear at the Town Clerk's office to be sworn in, thus making them official members of the Council on Aging Board with voting privileges. It was suggested that they apply for papers even if the letter was not forwarded, as this is an extremely busy time due to the upcoming election. The Secretary's Report as of May 9, 1983 was reviewed and it was duly moved, seconded and VOTED to be accepted as submitted. Treasurer Tine gave the Finamell Report as of N y 27 showing expenditures of $42,205873 leaving a balance of 94,777.85, (this includes the salary transfer.) It was duly .roved, seconded and VOTED that the Treasurer's Re-port he accepted. ADMINISTRATIVE SECRETARY'S REPORT Mr°s. McKinley's report was w vie,°ed by the Board. It included detailed statistics from January is to June 30, 1983 of the money returnod to" thi Town treasury from the receipts of class fees and van transportation. There was a general discussion regarding the success of the picnic held, on May 26. It was well attended by the seniors and the Participation Of 50 sixth graders greatly contributed to the festivities. It was the opinion of the Board members that the intergenerationa.l feature should be repeated in other lr ograms Chaairpe-rson. Knapp introduced Eileen Lloyd, System Manager of Continental Cablevision. Ms. Lloyd gave a, brief rundown of the activities of the cable- vision company. She stated that all the equipment used by them ;is owned by the Town of Reading. 569 of Reading residents are users. Ms. Lloyd answered questions by the Board and it was generally agreed that the system is under- utilized. Senior citizen participation is welcome and the Board was invited to tour the studio. A definite date will be set in the near future Secretary's Report -2- June l3, 1983 Dick Felone stated he would life to see a package deal v hers by a segment by senior citizens could be ins rt-ed in "Our Town." There is a definite tweed for more volunteers and Donna Barret Tucker is willing to hold workshops for interested seniors to acquaint them with the procedures. A com- mitment of ap r o inately ten hours a week is desired in order to followup on the training given. X771 BUSDINESS The Administrative Secretary stated that the Atlantic Food Market had run a $500.00 ad in the Reading :Senior Citizen Update, a publication discontinued: this Spring. She suggested. that the Darket Night agree to donate the same sum to the Council. After discussions, a motion was duly made, seconded and VOTED "that the Administrative Secretary approach the Atlantic Food Market with a request for X500 GO credit or the use of the Council on n° programs . PODIATRY CLINIC Fran-,. Zerwire reported he discussed with the Patrons for Older Adults the possibility of that organization assuming: the cost for a Podiatry Clinics The Patrons said they would research the idea before making their decision. SUMMER PROGRAMS Chairperson Mna-pp explained to the new members that it has been the custom for the Council on Aging to hold four evening programs during the surs?rer- tiro In July and two in August. ELDERBERRIES The Elderlberries is the one official information letter that goes out to all Reading senior citizens. It lists all the programs, classes for the coming year, and general information. It is issued the end of August. The postage is paid for by the Patrons for Older Adults and it is reproduced on school equipment. The paper and labor is supplied by the Council on Aging. FUTURE PROGRAMMING! Chairperson Knapp reported the results of meetings with the three senior housing residents which were held to get their input for :Future; programs. The Chairperson announced that the :hoard is one member short and asked for suggestions to fill the one-year vacancy. She also stated she planned to write to the former Board, members who have completed their terms, or resign.ed$ and thank them for their service. SIGNATURE AUTHORITY t Chairperson Knapp stated that there has been some inconvenience due to the fact that two signatures are required for payroll authorization. After dis- cussion a ?notion was duly made, seconded and. VOTED "that the payroll in the future require only one signature, either theC`.e irperson, Vice Chairperson or the Treasurer.
