HomeMy WebLinkAbout1983-05-09 Council on Aging MinutesCOUNCIL ON AGING Secretary's Report may 9, 1983 The regular monthly meeting of the Council on Aging Board. was held on 1 ondayo May 9, 1983. Attendees; Chairperson Lorna Knapp; members Dick Felone, Betty Knox, ary Ottino, Sebastian Tine, Lee Winslow, and Associate Member Frank Lemaire. Absento Rheta McKinley, Administrative Secretary; members Tony Barrasso, Andy Mulhinch, and Donna Ruth. The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Knapp at 7:40 P.M. The Secretary's Report for April 11 was reviewed by the Board. Frank Lemaire questioned the statement that the Patrons for Older Adults was started in 1978. (next to last paragraph on first page.) As the exact date wasn't known by the Board it was decided to delete the sentence. Upon motion duly made and seconded it was VOTED to accept the minutes as corrected. Sebastian '.fine, Treasurer, reported that as of April 28 the General Fund balance was $8,1,`1.~a2ti Expenditures of 36,?j6e68 represents 83.0 of the budget, which corresponds quite accurately with the fiscal year. He stated we are still carrying a balance for Home Care but in our latest warrant we have a request that will meet this obligation. Sebastian stated that he had been asked by Administrative ;secretary McKinley to attend the meeting held at the Town Hall in regard to the Union, as Mrs. McKinley is covered by the contract - thus ineligible to attend. Sebastian displayed a copy of the contract and suggested, that each member of the Board read it. Nary Ottino offered to make copies for the members. Chairperson Knapp thanked hir, for attending the meeting and reporting thereon. Chairperson Knapp asked. for a brief' report from Frank Lemaire on the T'ystic Valley Elder Services meeting, Mir, Lemaire had not received the minutes but it was determined that most of the meeting was devoted. to the subject of the contracting process for meal vending, trans- por°tation services, hbme care and chore providers, and the procedures used to send out requests for proposais. ADMINISTRATIVE SECRETARY'S REPORT The Board discussed the exhibition of the articles made in the various classes sponsored by the Council on Aging. The exhibit was deemed a great success in spite of the inclement weather. If this program is offered again it will be necessary for definite rules to be et up governing the articles displayed, and a committee of senior citizens will be required to take charge. Council on Aging -2- may 9, 1983 The Board noted that a $25.00 gift certificate from Marshall's has been donated as a door prize at the Senior Citizen Forum on May 13, 1983. There was a discussion concerning the picnic scheduled for Thursday, May 26. It was noted that help will be needed to carry chairs from the auditorium and to set up tables. It was suggested that the Administrative Secretary request help from the Department of p1blic Works, Administrative Secretary McKinley's attendance at "Futures of Aging" Conference was discussed. She attended many of the workshops and brought back literature and brochures concerning the workshops she was unable to attend. She was most enthusiastic about the In.tergenerational aspect, a, concept she she had previously discussed with Mrs. Knapp. The Chairperson stated that she had received a letter from the Barrows School saying that ate, 6th grade class was studying Geriatrics and requesting a speaker to come to the school and address the class. Chairperson Knapp volunteered to do this and has arranged to speak to the class an Monday, May 16th. It was generally agreed by the Board members that this interaction should be encouraged. Some of the programs in bordering towns were cited wherein children and older adults mingled and exchanged ideas. Chairperson Knapp suggested that she speak to the teacher about the possibility of having the class come to the picnic. OLIN BUSINESS Budget Report - Chairperson Knapp reported she had to go to three sessions of the Town Meeting before the Council on Aging budget, came up. She was informed that the new salaries (7% for this year, and 6% for next year would have to be included in the budget. The Finance Committee came up with a, figure (55,563•) and the motion passed. Programs for May - "Close Harmony" is being shown on May 18 at 1:30 PM in the Senior Citizens' Meal Site. It was suggested that students be invited to attend. Some form of entertainment at the picnic has been suggested by Adminis- trative Secretary KcKinley. The Board was in favor of the idea but no action was taken.. It was suggested that one of the local organizations might agree to sponsor the program. NEW BUSINESS Summer Evening Programs - The activities planned ares July 6 Cook out, funded by Patrons for Older Adults July 2G Entertainment - Betty Knox suggested Clog dancing and will chair program. August 3 Bingo - Mary Ottino offered to take charge August 17 'sine, cheese and a film, Lee Winslow offered to chair this committee. Council on Aging; -,A T117ay 9, 1983 Chairperson Knapp mentioned that her meeting with the Cedar Glen residents on April 27 was a great success. One impression she received was that the Cedar Glen people thought the majority of activities were being held at Tannerville. For this reason Mrs. Knapp suggested that one of the summer programs be held at the Cedar Glen facility. Monday, May 23 at 7830 there will be a Planning Meeting at Peter Sanborn Place. All Board members are welcome. The Governor's Conference on Aging will be held at Worcester State College from 900 AM to 3:00 PSI on I-lay 20; the $3.00 fee includes luncheon. Reservations are required by May 10. Diabetes Education classes will be held on consecutive Thursdays starting June 2nd for four sessions. Courses will be held at the John Agnew Hall (the meal site) from 12130 to 1.30. Administrative Secretary McKinley has expressed art interest in developing TV cable Programs by and for senior citizens. Dick Felone stated that cable has a tremendous potential, especJ,611y for informational service groups line the elderly. He expressed his willingness to work with hrs. McKinley on this project. Chairperson Knapp said she would confer with Mrs. McKinley and arrange for a representative from c=able TV to come to the Council on Aging meeting and talk more specifically. There was a general discussion regarding recognition of volunteers. It was agreed that the first or second week of June would be the best time for a Tea. There was a motion duly made, seconded and VOTED that "we make ar- rangements for some certificates to be presented to the volunteers. of Intergenera.tional programs - Chairperson Knapp suggested that a letter be sent to every school in Reading stating that if they are interested in the subject of geriatrics that the Council on. A; ing would be happy to send a representative to the school to talk with the class. She stated that it would be advisable to start with one interested school. Chairperson Knapp stated that by the time of the next Board meeting there will 'nave beer. three sessions of meetings at elderly housing units and that she would lake to devote as much time as possible to Fall programs.
