HomeMy WebLinkAbout1981-01-14 Council on Aging MinutesCouncil on Aging Regular Meeting January 14, 1981 The regular meeting of the Council on Aging was held on Wednesday, January 14, 1981 in the Senior Center. There was considerable discussion concerning the Senior Citizen Newsletter. Eleanor Keating objected to the title "Council Newsletter" also Rheta McKinley as Director and Marie Upton, Secretary included in the heading. Fred Perry who is the Editor of the newsletter feels there should be more material in order to provide a presentable publication. John Price reported the Senior Center floor will be cleaned three times a week by the building maintenance crew also washed and waxed on a regular basis. The minutes of the December 10, 1980 meeting were accepted with the following addition: at the request of Selectman Marvin Rosenthal it was voted: to al- low the Finance Committee to use the Senior Center for evening meetings as needed. Mr. Price then asked about last year°s budget and reminded the Board that FY81-82 budget should be level funded. Mr. MacDonnell moved we postpone cutting the budget until after it is presented to the Finance Committee. This met with the Board®s approval. At this point Selectman John Price objected to the listing of Rheta McKinley as Director on the heading of the Newsletter. He.based this on the Town of Reading by-laws for personnel classification. On a motion by Donna Ruth it was voted to delete the word. "Director" of the Council from all Council correspondence and business. John MacDonnell opposed, requesting a roll call vote. Eleanor Keating, Andy Mulhinch, Donna Ruth and Harold Wyatt voted "yes". Betty Knox, Mary Ottino and John MacDonnell voted "no", Arthur Polychrones abstained. Motion carried. Mrs. McKinley left the meeting at this point. Mr. Zemaire reported he had contacted the local druggists about writing an article on generic drugs. Mr. Berson was not interested, he is not a writer, Mr. Pehrson of Mall Drug and Mr. Rotsart of C.V.S. may send material at a later date. VOTED: to change the name of Council Newsletter to "Reading Senior Update Page 2 Secretary°s report--January 14, 1981 Betty Walsh of the Christian Service Committee at St. Agnes Church spoke to the Council about providing meals to shut-ins on weekends. On a motion by Harold Wyatt it was voted to have the Chairman appoint a sub-committee to neet with the representatives of the Reading Church Group to discuss the pos- sibility of supplying meals to the elderly of Reading on weekends and holidays. Mr. Lemaire accepted the following volunteers: Harold Wyatt, Donna Ruth, Mary Ottino and Arthur Polychrones to work with this group. Carole Ryan of the Geriatric Outreach Team f`o4r^ support of the Council to start a Family Life Support-,Group in March or April. VOTED: to help Carole Ryan in forming a Family Life Support Group. Harold Wyatt objected to the budget even though it was approved by the Board at the December 10. 1980 meeting at which he was present. No further action.
