3. Sub-committee reports
Uptown 2000 - Ace reported that the Uptown 2000 committee has a chairman - Joanne Secher.
Joanne has experience from her work on Reading's 350`h "Jubileve" event, where she served as
Event Co-ordinator. The sub-committee has adopted a "decades" theme, initially prompted
several weeks ago by an offer from Eddie Dee, who would like to establish a 1960's coffee house
at one of the venues. He has offered to do all the decorating as well. Fred Foy, of The Lone
Ranger radio show fame, has offered to take part as well, prompting plans for a 1940's style radio
show re-creation. Music Street will play under a tent on the Common, and may serve as masters
of ceremony for the midnight celebration.
Birch Meadow 2000 Alan Smith and Steve Crook met with Jody Roff'i, who has offered to help
in the planning and decorating. She has also considered a "decades" theme for the Birch
Meadow celebrations.
Steve talked to Lorraine Dennis of the YMCA with respect to her staff. She feels that the
sieepover may not work. Steve will follow up on finding space for the world map.
Talent Co-ordinators - The talent co-ordinators have received commitments from a band called
"Not Fade Away", Fred Foy, Harold Bond of the Quannapowitt Players, and the Bell Ringers
from the Old South Church.
Electronic Communication - None.
Written Communication - Both newspapers contained press releases concerning our talent
search.
Industrial Expo - Dick met with the Light department. The RMLD will be on the first floor. To
date, we have six "entities" committed to the expo.
Video - Writing is continuing.
Corporation -The $10,000 check from the 350th Celebration Trust Fund has been received.
Steve will create a photo-op check. Mary will arrange for the photo-op.
5. Fund Raising Activities
T-shirts - All vendor bills are paid. Ace is still owed the $600 that she loaned the corporation to
pay Hartnett. Dick turned in $4,625 to the treasury. Dick has offered to sell t-shirts at
Community Day.
Dick researched the prices of alternative souvenirs, available from Hartnett. Hats are $4 each. If
we want the picture on the front, and date on the back, the price is $5.25 each. Travel mugs are
$2 each for 288 pieces ($2.35 for 144). Glass coffee mugs with 3 colors are $4.88 for 144.
- Champagne glasses with "2000" written in the stem are $5.57 each for 144 pieces.
Poster - Nothing to report.
Celebration Trust -Mary has suggested that the Steering Committee inform the Chamber of
Commerce that we will be looking for more lights this year. They may want this information
when approaching the Celebration Committee (350th Celebration Trust) for Common Lighting
funding. Ace will contact Ann Marie Brennick.
Ace will contact the Corporation Board about applying for a loan from the trust fund. Dick
Moved that we ask for $25,000, and it carried 5-0-1.
An application to the Cultural Council was also discussed, but no vote was taken. The committee
wants to discuss the philosophy of paid performers and reach consensus before taking such
action.
Sponsorship Marketing - No update.
Other - No business.
6. Open Discussion
Phil Vaccaro was present at the meeting to discuss the use of facilities at the school. He agreed
to work with the committee to make available any space that we need. He will also advise us on
space that he feels is not practical. He requested Alan Smith's presence at a meeting with the
Boosters, and has offered to tour the facilities with him.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:40 PM. to May 12th, 1999.
