Millennium Steering Committee
October 14, 1999 Meeting # 21
The meeting was convened at 7:08 PM in the Employee Lounge at Town Hall.
In attendance: Anna Carroll Foulds, Alan Foulds, Mary Hatfield, Karen Sawyer, Mary Williams, and
Steve Crook.
Non-committee members: Karin Samatis, Rita Robertson
Business
t 1. Minutes
The minutes of September 27th, 1999 were approved.
2. Correspondence
Skyline Music answered our email concerning talent, with a roster of their clients and prices.
Tom Rush's "Club 47" show costs $10,000. "Danny & the Juniors answered our email. They
charge $7,500 plus travel expenses, per appearance.
3. Sub-committee reports
Uptown 2000 Nothing.
Big Tent on the Common - Mary Hatfield gavean estimate to the bank, and is expecting an
answer on 10/13.
World Clock - Alan is continuing work with Steve Trites. It is hoped to have the electrical work
nailed down soon.
Midnight - Steve Crook has not yet talked to the people at the Old South Church about lighting
the clock, yet.
YMCA - Nothing new.
Talent Co-ordinators - Karin Samatis followed up talent leads, with the following results:
Teddy Roosevelt is unavailable.
Amelia Earhart is unavailable.
rf Robin Lane is still a possibility.
The Reading Symphony Orchestra would like to be included in the celebration. Ann Decker will
get back to Anna (Ace) with their availability.
Electronic Communication - Karen reported that the web site has been updated, with a scrolling
message concerning button sales.
Written Communication - Mary Williams reported that a story about the Millennium Party
appeared in Reading Notes.
Industrial Expo - Dick Stosez was absent.
Video - Alan reported that the first tape has been produced. Additional pictures will be taken.
Corporation - Rita Roberston reported a board meeting will be held early next week.
Budge - Alan distributed a budget spreadsheet for review (attached). Rita will provide the Board
with a copy for use in reviewing our check requests.
4. Fund Raising Activities
T-shirts - Ace reported Dick was to have ordered Sweat Shirts from Reading Trophy and Shirt so
they'd be here in time for Town Meeting. Dick was not present to confirm.
Poster- On a motion by Alan it was voted to abandon attempts to run a poster contest.
Celebration Trust- Mary Williams reported a delay in the release of funds by the Celebration Trust
group. The first of three payments to us to make up the $15,000 loan was to have been released
this week. A clerical/organizational problem has prevented the release to date. Mary will follow
up with the Commissioners of Trust. Ace will keep checking the PO Box.
Sponsorship- Mary Williams has written a draft letter but will wait to hear on the tent sponsorship
before she approaches too many others.
Other- Ace received a written price list from Golden Spiral for the "First Light! 'torches:
The first price break is at a volume of 500: 5.75 ea + $125. Shipping. A 10% discount is offered
COD. On a motion by Alan we approved up to $3,000 for torches and batteries.
5. Open Discussion
Per letter from Dr. Harutunian, the schools have been assigned decades as follows:
High School: 00's through '39: The work will be headed up by the History Club.
Parker: 40's: Computers, Tazmania, Queensland
Coolidge: 60's: Old Coolidge vs New Coolidge and a live musical performance
Barrows: 80's: Books that won the Caldecott Awards and old video games
Birch Meadow: 90's: Video and quilt
Joshua Eaton: 50's: Miscellaneous Music Concert
Killam: 70's: Elena Rauci is organizing a musical program
The meeting was adjourned at 8:34 PM. to November 1, 1999.
