1. Minutes
( The minutes of November 16'h, 1999 were approved.
2. Correspondence
Ace received a phone call asking questions about the party.
Mary Williams reported that Reading's Millennium Party was mentioned in Boston Magazine.
Karen Sawyer received emails from South Carolina and Ohio.
Karen will add button prices, torch prices, and schedules to the web page.
3. Tent
The town has told us that we cannot have a 40'x80' tent on the Common. We will have to go
with the 40'x60' tent. It will be placed on the Salem Street side, with the long side facing the Old
South Church.
Mary Ellen O'Neill has the permits for electrical work and plumbing (propane tanks), as well as a
fire resistant certificate.
Karen feels that AGA gas is the best company to go with. She said that the company told her to
call back in December and they would be able to supply us. Dick has tried Eastern, BOC, and
Yankee. Dick will follow up by getting up to 4 quotes, and decide on the best deal. He will co-
ordinate with Mary Ellen O'Neill and Mary Hatfield.
The rental agreement states that the tent will go up on December 30' at 8 am, and come down on
January 4`'' at 8 am.
Greg at Strand Sound wants to visit the Common. He will come at 8 PM Monday. Steve Crook
will get in touch with Paul Carson of RMLD. Karin Samatis will also attend.
4. Buttons, Torches, and Shirts
87 buttons were sold on the I` day of sale, at the Common Lighting. Buttons will be sold at
Dragon Corner (30 buttons, to start), Dynamik Sport (30 buttons to start), Reading Trophy (50
buttons to start), and The Hot Spot in Reading (30 buttons to start).
The bill for the latest shirt order is for $1,977. 40% of the order is sold. Dynamik Sport is a
possibility as an additional shirt outlet. Dick Stosez will speak with Judy and Peter Dougherty.
5. Midnight
General discussion took place, at which Steve Crook gave his possibilities for midnight activities.
The tentative schedule is as follows: Sally Hoyt will introduce the recorded speech, regarding the
events of a century earlier, and give an explanation of the connection between the church and My
Country `Tis of Thee. My Country `Tis of Thee (America) will be used as background music.
Kevin Vendt may be the speaker. Next, Brendan and Babe Hoyt will sing Auld Lang Syne. Sally
will then lead the town in the count-down (or count-up) to Midnight. At Midnight the Militia
Cannon will be fired, a banner unfurled, and special lighting of the clock will start. Confetti
cannons will also be shot off.
Anna (Ace) offered a second proposal concerning Craig Gallant, the Drama Coach at Milford
(NH) High School. Mary suggested that we consider hiring him to "produce" midnight. Dick
moved to authorize up to $1,000 to hire him and to pay expenses. It carried 6-0-1 with Alan
abstaining.
6. Issues List
See separate Issues List.
7. Schedule and talent.
Dick Stosez moved that we increase the amount we pay to Music Street to $1,000, and ask that
they play for a longer period of time. It carried 7-0. Karin Samatis will negotiate.
The committee is concerned that a good portion of our talent is scheduled early and there will not
be much happening during the later hours. A budget review revealed that we could safely spend
an additional $2,000 on talent. Karin will work this week to fill the gaps.
Dick moved that we purchase two additional ice sculptures. This increases the number to 4.
Locations for them are: Latham & Latham courtyard, Senior Center, Reading Co-operative Bank,
and Church of the Good Shepherd. The motion carried.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 PM. to December 8th, 1999. Other future meetings will be Monday,
December 13', and Monday, December 20`''.
