HomeMy WebLinkAbout1987-04-13 Council on Aging MinutesREADING COUNCIL ON AGING Board Meeting, April i3, 1987 The meeting convened at 5:30 p.m. 'in the dining room at-52 Sanborn Street, Reading. . PRESENT: R. Felone, Vice Chairperson; J. Soule; G. Cail; B. Doucette; S. Tine; W. Baldwin; R. Montague; L. Spaulding; G. Rourke and Rheta McKinley, Administrative Secretary ABSENT: R. Gibbons; Doris Fantasia and Aloyse Jellison Richard Dempster, Chairman of Reading Housing Authority and Peg Plansky, Executive Director, appeared before the Board to request support to convert a building owned by St. Agnes' Church, for congregate and elderly housing. Following the pres- entation, they answered questions from the Board. The Board voted approval of the concept to use the building for housing. MINUTES The minutes were read and accepted. REPORT OF ADMINISTRATIVE SECRETARY Report was read and accepted. OLD BUSINESS VOLUNTEER DINNER: After discussion it was decided to drop the idea of honoring selected guests because there are many who do provide extra support for the Council on Aging. The menu was discussed and agreed upon. The cost of the meal will be $8.00 per person and Rheta reported that $300 had been received from Court Resources Program and $350 from Patrons of Older Adults to help defray the cost. Entertainment by the Reading High School "Singers" will be given. The cost will be about $50. There will be no charge for use of the Masonic Temple, but the caterer must pay $25 to use the kitchen. Rheta reported any charges above above the $650 donation be taken from the Council on Aging budget. BUDGET: Rheta reported that the Town Manager presented our budget to the Finance Commitee and it was approved. However, he did not present the budget portion for"new programs: (Additional part time clerk or full time clerk and upgrade.Admini.strative Secretary, presently classified as clerk.) Following the presentation of budget for Health-Department, the Town Manager requested funding for part time clerk to be used as a "Floater" for Council on Aging, Board of Health, Veteran's Services and Fuel Assistance. This was passed by the Finance Committee and will be line items in Health Department Budget. A motion was made and seconded to send the Town Manager a letter, signed by the chairman,'asking why we had not re- ceived a a reply to a letter on March 18, 1987 concerning our By-Laws. OLDER AMERICANS MONTHS: There was discussion about a rain date if the picnic was rained out on May 2-8. Rheta explained that if it rained on the morning of the picnic it would be difficult to postpone because nothing could be done about the lunches. We may be able-to have it upstairs in the Community Center or use the Masonic Temple. Rheta will contact the Barrows: School to again have students come and entertain. Some-of the other suggestions for the Older Americans Month was the Spelling Bee and a Charter Proclamation, and Rheta will finalize other dates. OTHER DATES: Rheta announced that the Board. Training which was scheduled for April in Wilmington was cancelled for lack of interest. The Executive Office of Elder Affairs offered to attend a Board meeting and do a training session. A motion was made and seconded to have a representative from EOEA attend our May meeting. There was discussion about what other towns were paying their van drivers. Wakefield pays $8/hour and Rheta will check with other towns to see what their pay scale is. Dick Felone brought up that we soon would be electing officers and that he would not be continuing as chairman after July lst.
