Board Meeting - June 8, 1987
MASS.
The meeting convened at 5:30 in the Dining Room of the Senior CeMrNOV -b P 3: 2
at 52 Sanborn Street.
MEMBERS PRESENT: R. Felone; A. Jellison; B. Doucette; W. Baldwin; C. Gail;
R. Gibbons; R. Montague; J. Soule; S. Tine; D. Fantasia;
L. Spaulding; G. Rourke and staff member Rheta McKinley.
ABSENT: None
The meeting opened with Emmett Schmarsov of the Executive Office of Elder
Affairs who gave a talk on Board Training and How To Be A Good Board
Member. The following are highlights of his presentation:
It is important to have all older people know location of the Senior
Center and what programs and activities are available.
What is the total for the Council on Aging budget and how does
it break down per Senior Citizen.
Council on Aging Board and residents should advocate for legislation
of issues concerning older people and keep fellow citizens informed.
Outreach is an important role of the Council on Aging and also,
important is the education of the community to the roll of the
Council on Aging.,
The Council on Aging Board should be more involved in planning
programs and activities for older people. Organize the Seniors
for political reasons and become more visible..
Send the Board of Selectmen, Finance Committee and all town meeting
members current information concerning the Council on Aging.
The Board Members felt this was a very interesting and worthwhile
program, giving them "food for thought".
A motion was made, seconded and voted to accept the minutes of the
previous meeting.
The Financial Report was read and accepted. There was discussion of monies
remaining at the end of the year. The balance of the budget is in amount of
$10,975.
The report of the Administrative Secretary was accepted with no
discussion..

NEW BUSINESS: The summer evening program dates were finalized:
July 8 Cookout at Frank Tanner Drive at 6:00 p.m.
July 22 Ice Cream Smorgasbord will be held at Peter
Sanborn Place at 6:30 p..m. Enid Schmuch will
give a slide presentation on Germany.
Aug. 5 A musical or sing-,a-long will be held at
Cedar Glen at 6:00 P.M.
Aug. 19 Bingo at Frank Tanner Drive at 6:00 p.m.
Dick asked for volunteers to a nominating committee to present slate
of officers for 1987-1988. G., Cail, A. Jellison and S. Tine volunteered..
Sebastian would like to again have a beginner Dance Class. At the present,
time there is no instructor available. Gladys Cail agreed to check the
availability of instructors for this class.
Woody Baldwin asked about a Pre-.Retirement Program for the coming year.
Rheta feels it requires more time and staff them we have available.
After discussion, Rosemary Gibbons agreed to chair this program, perhaps
the Volunteer Coordinator could help out during the summer months..
RELOCATION: Aloyse, Dick and Rheta have met with the Town Manager to.
discuss the relocation of the Senior Center. The Town Manager presented
a set of preliminary plans from the architect which has the Senior Center
located in the lower level of the preposed town hall complex. We would
have 1800 sq. ft. of space, we presently have 2800 sq. ft.. The Executive
Office of Elder Affairs recommends 3 sq. ft. per older person, with
approximately 6000 Seniors, this works out to 12000 sq. ft.
A motion was made, seconded and voted to communicate the following
feelings of the Board Members to the Town Manager: "We feel space in .
the twn hall complex is woefully inadequate.."
DONATIONS: Donations in the memory of "Connie Tallent" have been re,
ceived.to be used for the Meals-on-Wheels Program. Motion was made
and seconded that the donations be used for emergency meals on a short.
term-basis and to supply holiday meals for those on the Meals-,on-,,Wheels
Program.
At 8:15 p.m. a motion to adjourn was made and seconded.,
