HomeMy WebLinkAbout1988-06-13 Council on Aging MinutesMINUTES - Council On Aging - June 13, 1988 Members Present: Rosemary, Gibbons, Gladys Cail, Dick Felone, Loretta Spaulding, Barbara Ritchie, Gertrude Pool, Aloyse Jel lison, Members Absent: Woody Baldwin, Barbara Doucette, Gail Rourke, Sebastine Tine Staff Present: Lois Bond The meeting: was called to order at 5:35 PM by Vice Chairperson, Rosemary Gibbons. No motions were passed during tonights meeting because there wasn't a quorum. Financial Report:, Was given by Lois Bond. The projected balance by June 30, 1988 will be $1,753.64. There may still be some out- standing bills. Aloyse Jellison would like to see the balance go to the dance committee to offset costs. Rosemary Gibbons sug- gested purchasing Webber Kettles. for cookouts. Lois will` check into. Directors Report:- The Board agreed with Rosemary Gibbons that the evaluations of the programs listed in the Director's report were a good idea and would help if these events were held again. The Board discussed each of the evaluations and made suggestions to make the programs better next .time. Summer Evening Program Plans: Cookout at Tannerville July 6th - The Board agreed that reserva- tions should be taken from seniors to get an. approximate count to order enough food. Lois Bond, with help from Aloyse Jellison, will organize the cookout. Menu will be hotdogs and hamburgers. 'The Board would like to see-Eugene Nigro and Peter.Hechenbleikner come. The Board needs to find someone to help, fold tables and put away.chairs. A'letter will be written to ask the Patrons for Older Adults for a donation for $250.00 to help cover costs. A follow-up-thank you letter will.be written. Concert at Cedar Glen July 20th.-.Silvertone Orchestra will play -Need to call Sebastian.Tine about arranging. Ice Cream at.Peter'Sanborn Place Aug. 3rd - In previous years, Ice Cream came from Atlantic' Credit line. The Board will, help make and serve. Dick Felone_asked if some Board members could get there early to help set up; perhaps 5:15. Lois will.ask Inid or Norman Clark,to speak. Agnes Dulong: Dick'Felone spoke, as a representative of '.the Coun- cil on Aging. Trip Bank Account: Lois Bond reported that the'Bus Company wants the money when they arrive for pick up. Dick Felone suggested to see if the bus company will send a bill and then the COA could pay by'Town check. The COA could start there and report find- ings. Lois Bond will speak with Beth Klepis about a revolving account.. Lois Bond presented program suggestions to the Board.. Al•Barrios has a program called 55 Alive, a drivers education update for seniors. He is the AARP coordinator in this area. Eastern Middlesex Human Services has.a film available called Seniors and Alcohol Abuse. The program would take about an hour and.a half with discussion period. The program is available August 8 or 15. Aloyse Jellison felt Sept., Oct., or Nov. might be a better time, Lois Bond will,check if any dates in these months are available. Update on Pearl St. School: The Town Lawyer sent the lease to Faford on May,23. The lease is still being negotiated. May Baskets: As.the May Baskets were,such.a success; the Junior Women's Club. is anxious, to do.~other projects. 'A time is being set up to talk about what'the COA and the Junior Women's Cl}ib can do together to help seniors. On 6/14/88 at the Board of Selectmen's Meeting, between, 8 - 8:30 PM, the selectmen are.goirig to formally thank Barrows school for the "It's Good to Care" project. Lois Bond-will go to the meet- ing and present a certificate Rosemary Gibbons asked if a new outreach worker was being hired. Lois Bond reported that they are waiting for money in the budget to advertise. Pre retirement Seminar: Rosemary Gibbons requested the Board to read the outline and get back to her before the next meeting with their opinions. 'Five topics will be discussed. Rosemary Gibbons believes that there cannot be less than 4. The start time is 7:30 PM. The library is- all booked up but will try to get Pearl St. school. All Reading residents are invited. The Board dis- cussed having a workbook or just using handouts from speakers. The Board agreed to,request the speakers to have handouts to cut the cost of workbooks. Dick Felone reported to the Board that he did not reapply but will still maintain his relations with the seniors. The Board thanked Dick Felone for all he's done for the seniors. Meeting adjourned at 6:50. 2
