HomeMy WebLinkAbout1979-10-15 Council on Aging MinutesRegular Meeting October 15, 1979 Council on Aging The regular meeting of the Council on Aging was held on October 15, 1979 in the Recreation Hall at Tannerville. The Secretary's report was accepted with one correction, the first para- graph should read: Mr. Riemer expressed his displeasure with the Board. His purpose in attending the meeting appeared to be "to harangue the Board." Lorna Knapp gave a report on her visit to the Reading Housing Authority. She stated there are approximately 40 to 50 people on the waiting list with a three to four year wait. Cedar Glen should be ready for occupancy in about 18 months. These units will hopefully absorb everyone who is pre- sently on the waiting list. The majority of applicants are Reading resi- dents, former residents or have relatives residing in Reading. There will be 114 units with 20 to 25/ for people of low income. After a lengthy discussion it was decided the Van Driver will not do shopping or pick up food orders at the Market unless it is an emergency. Mr. Rennison asked for a volunteer to write the Senior Citizen news for "Suburban News". There were no volunteers. The Chairman had a copy of the Department of Elder Affairs budget showing an increase in the Home Care budget and the Elderly Lunch program. Transportation for the Cedar Glen project was discussed. It was tabled until McNeil Associates announce.their plan for transportation to and from the project. The Annual Dinner is scheduled for Sunday, November 11 at Austin Prep with a Turkey Dinner to be served by the students of Austin. Reservations will be taken at the Council Office. It was voted to have the "Old South Bell Ring- ers" for the entertainment and pay them $35.00 for a one hour performance. Flowers will again be done by Weston's and Eric's. However, this year a flower will be given to each person present and there will be a centerpiece for the Head Table and one for the Altar. In past years they have pro- vided a corsage for each of the ladies and a center piece for every table. Special invitations will be extended to Mr. Agnew, the Selectmen, Mr. Berson, Janet Pierce, Jim Muise, Eric's and Weston's, Father Johnson, the Trustees of Austin Prep, representatives of The Reading Chronicle, and The Suburban News. Mrs. McKinley suggested decorating the tables with squash, pumpkins, etc. Luigi Sablone the Van Driver will be on vacation.from November 5 to Nov- ember 20. It was voted to have Florence Farelli drive the Van during this period. Florence will be paid the regular rate of pay for driving on the day of the Annual Dinner. * Mr. Rennison introduced Eleanor Keating who is our new Board Member. Please include this as part of the Secretary's report dated October 15, 1979: The Secretary was instructed to obtain a Protestant Clergyman to assist at the Worship Service preceding the Annual Dinner. Secretary's report--con't, Mr. Rennison spoke to the School Committee Chairman, Bruce McDonald concerning having high school students help with Meals on Wheels delivery and Friendly Visiting. Mr. McDonals will see if this is possible. There was considerable discussion concerning the duties of the volunteers at the Meal Site.
