HomeMy WebLinkAbout1979-09-17 Council on Aging MinutesRegular Meeting September 17, 1979 Council on Aging The regular meeting of the Council on Aging was held on September 17, 1979 in the Recreation Hall at Tannerville. The Secretary's report was accepted as rendered. Mr. Rennison introduced Joe Riemer a Vista Volunteer with MAOA. Mr. Riemer gave a brief description of the training and duties of the Vista Volunteers. He is available for help if Senior Citizens have problems with Social Security, Blue Cross, Housing, etc. Again the question of Van transportation came up. The Board reiterated "No transportation would be provided to those people who own cars or live in a household where there is a car and driver unless space is available in the Van". Betty Walsh of St. Agnes Parish, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels reported on the wonderful response to her request for volunteer drivers--but more are still needed. Reading has an average of 30 homebound seniors receiving Meals on Wheels every day. Mr. Rennison announced that Mrs. Gibbons the Board of Health nurse will con- duct the Health Clinic at the Community Center on the second Thursday of the month. This will be held from 11:00 to 1:00. The Visiting Nurse will con- tinue to do the Clinic at Tannerville on the first Thursday of the month from 11:45 to 1:45. A Flu Shot Clinic will be held the end of October, date to be announced. Mr. Lemaire reported a good time was had by all who went on the bus trip to Fuller Gardens and Odione State Park in Rye, N.H. on September 11. Mr. Rennison will contact the high school concerning the availability of students for visiting shut-ins and to help with Meals on Wheels. On a motion by Andy Mulhinch and seconded by Frank Lemaire it was voted to raise the salary of the substitute driver to $4.00 per hour from $3.50 per hour. The subject of longer hours for the Secretary was tabled for the present. Mrs. McKinley announced that Austin Prep would like to have the Senior Cit- izen Annual Dinner on November 11. An ecumenical service would be held at 12:00 with dinner served at 1:00. Frank Lemaire moved to accept the offer with Andy Mulhinch seconding. A favorable vote was recorded with Lorna Knapp abstaining. Page 2--Secretary's report of September 17, 1979 Mrs. McKinley will check into entertainment for the Dinner and will also check with the florist concerning the flowers. There was considerable discussion concerning the Senior Center in the base- ment of the Community Center. Guy Rennison, Frank Lemaire, and Andy Mulhinch will meet with Mr. Agnew to discuss the staffing of the Center. There were 5 guests present. Meeting adjourned at 9:00 P.M.
