Council on Aging
The regular meeting of the Council on Aging was held on Monday, Nov-
ember 21st in the Recreation Hall at Tannerville. Mr. Lemaire called
the meeting to order in the absence of Mr. Rennison,
The secretary's report was accepted as rendered. There was no treas-
urer's report because the "printout" has not been received from the
Town Accountant,
Mrs. Louanis was thanked for a succesful dinner on the 17th. There
were 325 Seniors in attendance at the dinner which was held in St.
Athanasius Hall. Jay Dumas helped to set up the tables.
The group felt the Flu Shot Clinic was a worthwhile endeavor. Flu
Shots were given to 210 participants which is approximately 10;o of
those eligible. Dr. Guerra felt that people were turned off by last
years clinic which was federally funded. Expenses of the Flu Shot
Clinic was paid by the Patrons of Oider.Adults.
Our request for a non-profit permit was again turned down by the'Post-
office. After considerable discussion it was recommended the Council
request Mr. Agnew refer the matter to Town Counsel for help. If this
is not -possible we will ask the Patrons of Older Adults or the Golden ;
Age Club to allow the Council to use their non-profit status for mailing
the "Elderberries".
It was voted to send a letter to Megan Allen supporting the concept of
"Respit,~Care" and stating we would not be able to lend financial support
at any time because our by-laws stipulate programs for the elderly in
the community." Miss Allen's request that we appoint a senior citizen
to her advisory committee.was also denied because the Council has no
authority to make appointments,
Mr. Lemaire and Mr. Rennison attended the Selectmen's meeting on Oct-
ober 31st to report the Council activities. They appreciate the efforts
of the Council. They would also like to expand the Congregate Meals
Program to server 100-200 people and try to expand the Meals on Wheels
program.
The Outreach Committee of the Congregational Church has been contacted
by Mr. Lemaire for use of their dining room so more people can be served
than are presently being handled. Expanding the program will create
transportation problems, etc.
The members explored ways to help and extend services to the many people
we are not now servicing. A telephone group was suggested. Perhaps
Florence Farelli or Lorna Knapp couls come to a future meeting to assist
in developing plans, Mrs. McKinley reported Jackie Waldman of Mystic
Valley Elder Home Care was undertaking a project to train volunteers to
help out in this area.
Harold Wyatt suggested working through the Wakefield Retired Men°s Club.
Eugene Richey was optimistic about locating people to help reach those
who thus far have not participated in any of the.offered programs..
It was voted to send flowers to Mrs. Sablone (Luigi°s wife) who is hos-
pitalized.
On the motion of Jay Dumas seconded by Eugene Richey the meeting was
adjourned at 9:45.
