HomeMy WebLinkAbout1975-10-20 Council on Aging MinutesRegular {Meeting - October 20, 1975 The regular meeting cf the Council on Aging was held on Monday, October 20, 1975 at the Recreational_ Building of the Housing for the Elderly, Reading, Mass. "he meeting was called to order by the Chairman, Mrs. Virginia Hodson, at 7=30 P.-N. in addition to the Chairman, Mrs, Hodson, those in attendance were yrs. Jeanne rube`, 1°r. James :pumas, The Rev. Frederick Emrich, Dr. Vincent Guerra, Mrs. Betty Louanis, Mrs, Verna Lantz, Mrs. Edith Sias, and Mr. Charles Stratton. The secretary, Tars, FIhelma Somers, was also present. Can motion duly made and seconded it was unani.mouslys VOTEDt To accept the secretary's report of the previous meeting, Copies of which had been mailed to all Council members; On motion duly made and seconded it was unanimously; OTEt To accept the treasurer's report stating; Balance July 1, 1975 :20,172.00 Expenses to date 4 24.44 151923-56 Mrs. Hodson reported on the forthcoming Flu Shot Program scheduled for Wednesday, October 29 at the Council office, The shots will be avail- able to those 55 years and older on a firstM-come first-serve basis be- tween the hours of 10 and 12 Noon on that date. Beading physicians and the Visiting Nurse Association will administer the shots, agars, l,ants volunteered her assistance on that day. Somers reported a lack of response in the health clinics which are scheduled twice a month at the Housing for the Elderly and the Council office .respectively. If the response doesn't increase after proper notifi- cation in the Chronicle and through the organizations, it was suggested the health clinic be reduced to once a month. The Annual Thinner was discussed, and .rs. Louanis, who has previously acted as Chairman of the event, volunteered to do so again. At this time some of the preliminary arrangements have been researched as to location and possible menu, and On motion duly made and seconded it was unanimously-, T2O2___; To hold the Annual :Ginner on Nov. 20, at St. Athanasius lull; to offer a dinner to 275, in- cluding "'uests and to accept the chicken Die dinner a $4010 offered: by Shaw Catering of Lynn to send le Vters of invitation to Pir. Berson, Father Collins, Mr. Smith, who will reDresent the patrons, Mr. Cummings, the Selectman, and Mr. Eric Swenson of Eric's Greenhouse; also Mrs. Nelson and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Beaton, Council members agreed to pay for their own dinners thereby making provision for more free dinners. The patrons for Older dults graciously accepted the expense of print- ing identification Cards for the use of our Senior Citizens in obtaining discounts. All 65 years of age and older will be eligible to receive a card. Mr.. ZLmrich and Krs. Lantz volunteered to compose a letter of authorization to be sent to the merchants of heading for the discount appeal. fArs. Mae ~Nlax-gell and Mrs. Elizabeth Watters have volunteered to serve as personal solicitors in this endeavor. Mrs. Louanis volunteered to distribute iden- tification cards through the Golden Age Club. Mrs. Sias of the Visitation Committee reported that on Oct. 29, a group would be working on favors to be distributed Dec. 2, to the lonely and elderly. She would like as many volunteers as possible to help with this pro ect. Mrs, Cox, our photography teacher, was present at the meeting and spoke of her desire to do photographic publicity for the Council. On motion duly made and seconded it was unanimously: VGTE ; To support Mrs. Cox in her pursuit. The "-Planning Board of Reading have submitted to us a proposal for trans- portation service in Reading, and .`r. t`rm, a member of their committee, has asked to speak at our next meeting on this proposal... On motion duly made and seconded it was unanimously: VOTED: To invite Mr. Sturm to speak at our lJovember meeting from 700 to 8:00 F.M. Dir. ablone, our Ian dxiver, was also present at this meeting and com- plained of shopping; for individuals and of disturbance by substitute dxivers during his recent illness. On motion duly made and, seconded it was unanimously-. OTIE : To advertise for a temporary driver as a permanent substitute; also shopping for individuals would not be a hart of the duties of the driver. In case of accident of a passenger it was concluded by the Council that the individual, should be taken to an emergency ward. On ?notion duly made and seconded. it was unanimously: ,rim To table for the next meeting concern for the individual who might need personal shopping; service.
