HomeMy WebLinkAbout1974-06-24 Council on Aging MinutesCOUNCIL GIN, AGING June A 1974 The regular meeting of the Council on Aging was held on Monday, June 24, 1974 in the Recreation Building of the housing for the Elderly, Reading, Mass. The meeting was called to order by the Chairman, Mrs, Nithalie C, Beaton at 700 P.K. with the following members present, in addition to the Chairman: Mr. Donald Farnham, Dr. Vincent Guerra, Mrs. Elizabeth Louanis, Mrs. Edith Sias, Mrs. Thelma Somers, the'secretary was also present, and. Mrs, Verna Lantz, On motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED: To accept the ;secretary's :report as read., with the one correction of .ennebunkport as the desti- nation July j, of the Council trip, instead of Ogunquit as reported,, On motion duly arcade and seconded, it was unanimously; VOTED. To accept the Treasurer's report given by Mrs. Beaton in the absence of Mr, Stratton, the Treasurer, stating that -total expenditures through June 14 were $18,845.00, leaving a bal- ance in the ;revenue Sharing Account of $3,932,500 and that an estimate balance as of June 30th might be in the neighborhood of $2,500 to 2,900. Mrs. Beaton reported that she had 5000 more or less, yet to spend of the x:1,500 allocated for office equipment, A*ong items needed are; a rile, copying machine, :materials for Ceramics Mass to make lamp bases for Drop- In-Center, it was thought a small copying machine would suffice our needs, possibly second-hand. A prone minder was not deemed necessary at this time, possibly later, The items purchased to date are: a rug, tape recorder, Sweetheart plastic supplies for Summer Programs, office supplies, vacuum cleaner, two chairs, two office desks and two chairs, two snow tires, drapes and material, Any monies in excess of our budget will be turned back to the Revenue Sharing Fund. Mrs. Beaton discussed with Mr. Dick Ogden of the town a possible Q salary review for two Council employees, and he thought such a provision possible. Mrs. Beaton will check further with hr, Ogden, The first Summer program will. -take place Thursday, June 27, with a cookout and games at Tannervi.lle. Mrs, Edith Sias will be assisted by her group of teenagers from the Cold South Methodist Church, Mrs, Beaton will solicit donations of salads and desserts from the Golden Age Group. She will puxchase potato chips and, condiments for the cookout; also small prizes to be given the game winners The health consultations Trill be discontinued for the summer. Itrs. Beaton asked for suggestions for Health Programs. The general. consensus was that I,Tursi.ng Home Care, as suggested by 11r. Nugent, would not afford: an enlightened program fox. the elderly. Something in the line of mental attitudes and health aids beneficial for all ages was thought to be of more interest. 'Airs. Beaton told of her recent conference with It?. Dunbar of the Nigh School who outlined a program his students have been providing the elderly. Mr. Dunbar would like any help we can give to his efforts. Mr. Farnham also suggested that some of the Senior Citizens -night find it rewarding to help the students in the classroom. The KiT,ranis have been entertaining the elderly with Beano at the Mousing for the Elderly, and IZrs. Beaton announced the last meeting would be Fridays Tune Dirs. Jean M. MacKilligan, President of the Patrons for Older Adults, Inc., is having a Pool Party and Barbecue for the elderly at her home on July 15 All 65 and older are cordially invited, but reservations must be made by call- ing Mrs. 14acKi lligan.. I?.rs. Beaton read a letter of invitation to the Annual Meeting of Older Citizens d''zairs to be held at Hynes Auditorium, June 25, from 12.15 to 3:45 P.M. The consensus was that the Council should not participate, but that it might be of interest to the Golden Age Group. On motion duly made and, seconded, it was unanimously: VOTED: That the meeting go into Executive Session. I-,Trs. Somers left the meeting at this time. Alter Mrs. Somers returned Is. Beaton reported that upon motion duly made and seconded, it had been unanimously: VOTED., That the Chairman should discuss with the Personnel Board of the Town salary revisions - and VOTED.- To go out of Executive Session. There being no further business to come before the meeting and upon motion duly made by Krs. Lantz and seconded, it was unanimously: VOTED,- To adjourn. The Chairman adjourned the meeting at 10:30 P- 1,11-Respect-fully submitted, Thelma JS aers Secretary The schedule of fall classes was reviewed by Mrs. Beaton, and al will be listed in the new "Elderberries," which will be in the i=laid, August 0. Mrs, Beaton announced that there will be a Council Bus Trip to Y okux $ s at Portsmouth and the Country tore in Barrington early in October. 'T'he Chairman reported can the progress made in furnishing he new fife and. Drop-in-Center; also the need for additional material for curtains and chair, a rug for the office, additional badge tables, pillows, a small refrigerator, and a movie projector for Efrop-Ire-Center progiams. It was sug- gested that we inform the Patrons of some of our priorities in the hope they might be of some help with our immediate needs. The Council Office moved twice recently and had much help in doing so from those employed by the Town, The question of tipping was rased, and it was unanimously agreed by the Board that no tipping should be granted torn employees. In view of this decision and On motion duly made by Mo. Guerra suggested a group of men and omen Senior Citizens might be interested in attending a Red Sox baseball game. Mrs. Beaton reviewed the new Council transportation schedule which has been in operation only one week, and, therefore, too early to eval- uate, it was suggested, that the driver of the gran, Hr. Sabl,one, keep an accurate record of passengers picked up on the Tuesday and Wednesday routes, The Workshop at Tannervill.e Frill., be discontinued for the summer. The Council Drop-:gin-Center, however, will continue on Friday afternoons from 1:30 to Q00 P.M. Mrs. Somers reported receiving 12 - 15 reservations to date for the Theater Party, July 13. There will be additional reservations before the deadline, July 1, but probably not a sufficient number to warrant hiring a bus, Mrs. Beaton spoke of the Fall. Classes, and asked for suggestions for new ones. Liquid Embroidery was suggested and will be given consider- ation, Former instructors, Mrs, Etling, ceramics, and. Mrs. Herrick, oil painting, will continue; also a 5-class special in photography will be offered with Mrs, George Cow: instructing, The offering; of hot meals was discussed. Dr. Guerra felt that men, in particular, were in need of. uch a program.Through the medium of church groups, and clubs with/ t Ye town of Reading, it was thought a call- ing program could be initiated to determine the needs of our elderly. `?here being no further business to came before the meeting, and upon motion duly -made and seconded, it was unanimously: OTE : To adjourn The Chairman adjourned the :meeting at 9:24 P.M.
