Regular a%Ieeting, June 3r 1974
The regular meeting of the Council, can Aging was held on honday,
June 3, 1974, in the Recreation Building of the Housing for the Elderly,,
Reading, iy;ass. Due to our scheduled date, May 27, falling on a holiday
this meeting date was advanced to June 3.
The meeting was called to order by the Chairman, k1rs, athal ie C,
Beaton at 7.40 ,M, with the following members present, in addition to
the Chairman; Mrs, Elizabeth Louanis, 1,1rs. Jean Dube', It s. Verna Lantz,
Mr Dona,l.d. Farnham, forming a quorum. Mrs, Thelma the secretary,
was also present.
On motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimouslyt

Somers left the meeting at this time.
Upon Mrs. Somers return-to the meeting the Chairman reported that on
motion duly. made and, seconded., 'it has been unanimously$
VOTED: To appoint 1,xrs, Thelma J. Somers as Executive Director
(as well as Secretary) of the Council, on Aging - and
To go out of Executive Session,
On motion duly made and seconded, It was then unanimously s
'OT:E : To accept the secretary's report of the previous meeting,
copies of which had been mailed to all Council :members,
On motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously-,
OTM: To accept the Treasurer's report given by firs. Beaton in
the absence of Sir, Stratton, the Treasurer, stating the
balances as of June 1, 1974 to be as follows;
Revenue Sharing Operating Budget 22077.50
Expenses 171-598.12
Balance 51,179.3
State Grant for Health Program 900.00
Expenses 523.36
Balance 376.64
Mrs, Beaton reported that, after estimating the regular expenses for
June, it appeared that there might be an unused balance of approximately
$4J09 as of dune 30th
On motion duly made by tar. Farnham and seconded, it was unanimously:
VOTED: To turn back to the town's Revenue Sharing Funds any un-
used balance at the end of the fiscal year.
TfTs. Beaton emphasized the need for new equipment and furniture for the
new office. She reported a tape recorder had been purchased* also office
supplies for projected use.
On motion duly made by i~ar. Tarnham and seconded, it was unanimously:
VOTT_",B: To allow, in addition to the $'500.00 already voted in the
May meeting, up to :1,000 from the budget to buy the neces-
sary furniture and equipment for the new office.
. Dirs. Beaton explained that the office of the Council has been moved
texaporarily to Room 9 of the Community Center until the YMCA offices are free
for our occupancy sometime in July. Two separate offices will comprise the
new space providing a suitable Drop-In-Center for the Reading Council on Aging.
The Summer grogram was reviewed, and the following dates and entertainment
have been confirmed:
June 27 Cookout and Games. Mr. Farnham and Mrs. Sias will assist.
July 18 - Square Dancing TrTith Punch and Cookies. Mrs. Verna Lantz
will assist.
Aug. 1 «Ice Cream Smorgasbord and "Show Tunes Concert" by the
Friendship Company. Mrs. Louanis will assist..
Aug. 15 - Cookout and the Quannapowitt players. Fars. Heaton and
Mrs. Somers will assist.
Aug. 29 m Tlatermelon Party and NI-Gp-14, Motion Picture, "Nerry Andrew,"
starring Danny Kaye. Mrs. Dube' will assist.
A discussion followed over the feasibility of hiring a, bus to take the
elderly to the North Shore Theater Parties. It was suggested that, if enough
reservations are made to warrant hiring a bus, we contact the McIntire Bus
Line in Wakefield or the D. <e: W. Line in No. Reading.
Mrs. L:ouanis spoke of the Millis bus trip scheduled for June 5, and as a
means of providing entertainment she made an expenditure of $5.00 for prizes
for games. She also reported that the next bus trip will be July 5 to Kpnnebuh point,
Maine, leaving the Church of the Good Shepherd at 10:00 A.M. The September trip
will be announced later.
On motion duly made by Mrs. Lantz and seconded, it was unanimously:
VOTED: To reimburse Mrs. Louanis for the '=5.00 upended on priyes.
Mrs. Beaton reviewed the local transportation program for the summer
months to become effective June 17, on an experimental basis. it will be out-
lined in the new edition of the "Flderberries,r' which will be mailed before
June 15
As. Dube' raised the question of of meads for the Elderly, and
'mss e Beaton will contact the State to determine hat subsidy is available
for the initiation of such a program.
There being no further business to erne before he meeting, and upon
notion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously:
