Regular Meeting, April. 22, 1974
The regular meeting of the Council on aging was held on Monday,
April 22, 1974 in the Recreation Building of the Housing for the Elderly,
Reading, Mass.
The meeting was called to order by the Chairman, Mrs. Nathalie C.
Beaton at 7:35 ' , mkt, with the following members pry _ q in addition to th
Chairman: Mrs. C. Verna, Lantz, Mr. Donald Farnham, Mrs. Edith R. Sias,
Mr. Charles Stratton, and Mrs, Nancy B. Hollingsworth, forming a quorum.
Mrs, Thelma Somers, the secretary, was also present,
Years. Beaton welcomed the new member of the Council, Mrs, Nancy
Hollingsworth, who was appointed by the Selectmen to represent the Recreation
Committee of the Town in accordance with the By-Laws; also the new secretary,

On motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously:
CIO' 'D; To accept the secretary's report of the previous meeting,
copies of which had been mailed to all Council members,

VQ?Q: To accept the Treasurer's report stating our expenditures
out of budget were $15,148,29 to date, l,eav;n 1 a balance
of 7,629.21. Attention was called to the 30, outside
the budget, previously allocated by the ;state to the
Health Foogram, All Health Program expenditures are pro-
vided for under the ;BOO grant from the State. Mrs. Beaton
will contact town officials to determine whether or not
excess funds can be returned to the town treasury..
'yrs. Beaton called attention to the need of snow tires for the Tan, a
new file, tape recorder, hot plate; also a new desk, rug and drapes for new
quarters. sifter considerable discussion it was agreed. that since there are
expected to be some funds left over in our budget (about $1300 outside of the
transportation allocation), and

VOTED: To allow up to 500 from the budget for expenditures
necessary to the office of the Council on aging.
Since the ageted funds for transportation were not required for the
:month of vl < iust 1973, because of the delay in delivery of the Van,
the mattes , possibly roto _n `n the-.,unused funds to the "Town was discussed.
Mrs 7oato stated that were waZ some question as to whether Revenue `haring
FAX Told be returned & the Town. However, the general opinion was that
if possible the Council would like to do this, and Mrs, Beaton said that she
would check the details further,
Mrs. Beaton announced that Easter flowers were sent from the members on
the Council to Mrs, Marion Tyminski, the Executive Director and Secretary, as
an appreciation and thank you remembrance. This was made possible by contri-
butions from each member of the Council.
On motion duly made by Mro Stratton and seconded, it was unanimous .yz
VOTED: That at any time in the absence of the Chairmanv Mrs. Beaton,
Mrs, Verna Lantz will serve as Acting Chairman.
The Supplemental Security Income Alert program initiated, by Social
Security was outlived by firs. Bea-ton& Vocally this program is under the juris-
diction of the Red Crosse Their contemplated, informative mailing in cooperation
with the Council on gang; to all 65 years of age and older was cancelled,
Instead: the Red Cross will have the program published in the locaYl, newspaper.
Under the Health :grogram Miss Virginia Gent will be at Tannerville
Saturdays May 4, June 1. and June 15 to explain Blue Cross, Blue Shield,
Medicaid and Medicare
The Summer Program was discussed. Mrs. Beaton announced that the bowling
was pOpular and would continue through the summer; also the shopping trips on
Thursday.
The following dates anal programs were suggested for the Summer Program;
Jude 27 - Cookout with Beano as entertainment, r. Farnham
Mrs. Sias, and Mr, Stratton will assist with this
endeavor.
July 18 m Watermellon Tarty with Choral. Group for entertainment.
Mrs, Verna Lantz and Mr. Stratton assisting.
August 1 - Ice Cream Smorgasbord
;august 15 - Cookout with hopeful, assistance from the Patrons
August 2 - Square Dancing - Punch and. Cookies - Mil Dixon calling
Theater Parties
July 13 Kiss Me =mate august lC - No No Nannette
On motion duly made by Tors, Sias and seconded it was unanimously,
VOTED; To carry out the Summer Program as scheduled if the dates
can be cleared,
it was suggested that the eRotaxy could be contacted as a source for deter-
mining the feasibility of merchandise discounts and identification cards for the
elderly in Reading
Mrs, Sias told of her visitation program for the elderly and shut-inse
She exhibited hand-crafted flowers her group leaves with the shut-ins.
The flowers would indeed make a nice craft for the eniorsin Reading.
Mrs, Beaton spore of a 1411ontreal Prograa which provides help to people
who might otherwise have to go into nursing homes, It covers all necessary
services from health to social activity, and it is run in the form of a day-
care center. Only those who are mobile are eligible for the services offered.
Mrs. Sias suggesiz the Council write letters backing the new health-care-
unit to be erected on the Wakefield-oReadi,ng line; she also recommended writing
for the institution of a day-care center for the elderly at the new Melrose-
Wakefield Hospital facility,
Mrs, Beaton called attention to the Pre-Retirement Planning Program being
offered at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital Educational Building for five
Tuesdays beginning April 23, Openings for enrollment are still, available at
this date.
Mrs, Beaton read a letter from Congressman Torbert MacDonald:, informing
of an amendment to the Older Americans pct which, if passed, would provide a
nutritional program for the elderly in the form of hot nutritious meals served
daily in community centers, churches, schools and for shut-ins; also one hour
a day for recreation.
There being no further business to come before the meeting, and upon
motion duly made by Mr, Stratton and seconded, it -vras unanimously:
