HomeMy WebLinkAbout1973-02-28 Council on Aging MinutesCOUNCIL ON AGING Meeting held on February 28, 19'73 The regular meeting of the Council on Aging was held in Room 1 of the Community Center, 52 Sanborn Street on February 28, 1973# at 7:30 P.MQ In addition to the Chairman, Mrs. Beaton those present were„ Mrs, Verna Lantz, Mr. :Donald Farnham, Mr. Charles Stratton, Mrs. Elizabeth Louanis, Mrs. Edith Sias, Rev. Frederick Emrich. Miss Mary Larkin and Mars. Marian Tyminski, Executive Director were also present. Mrs. Beaton announced; that the Selectmen had received a letter from Mr, Paul Dube resigning from the Council on Aging because his work required him to be out of town and unable to make the .meetings. It was the recommendation of the Council that Mrs. Jeanne Dube or Mr. Richard Evans be asked to fill the vacancy. On motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously; VOTED: To accept the Secretary°s report of the January meeting which had previously been mailed to the Council members. Mr. Stratton reported that to date $665.55 had been spent. V0°T~ET) ® To accept for the records the Treasurer's report. The Budget for the next eighteen months continued to be the most important matter before the Council.. Considerable discussion developed into the following recommendations: 1. Mr. Farnham, Rev. Emrich., and. Mrs. Lantz would like to see the Council a: r !.be Town Meeting for our previously stated budget of $22t777.50 2. 1-1r. "tratton recommends that a Progress Report be given to each of the Town Meeting members. 3. Mr. .Farnham recommendd that a comparison budget be prepared for the Town Meeting members and Mrs. Beaton could explain the new items and answer their questions. On motion duly made and seconded-,by Mr. Stratton, it was unanimously-. VOTEDt That in accordance with offer :trade by members of the 'T'annerville Fair 72, ooo. oo be accepted for the a of the Town of Reading provided that the recommendation of the Finance Committee for the eigh=teen months budget for January 1, 1973 through June,30, 1974 of $9,000.00 for the Council on Aging is raised by that $2,000.00 along with the $900.00 State Grant to a total budget of $11,900.00. Mrs. Beaton announced that she has received a letter from the Town Board of Health with the approval to conduct a Health Program. This will consist of 1/2 hour conferences with a Visiting Nurse, movies and lectures, Mrs, Beaton, Mrs. Murphy and Mrs, Tyminski will start the program Tuesday, March. 20, from 2.00 to 4:00 P.M, A great deal of pupli.ci.ty will, be needed. Miss Larkin reported, on a seminar that she attended at Boston University where the Youth and the Elderly were brought to-gether for greater understanding. She felt it was very succesfu.1 and should be tried more often, Mrs, Edith Sias spoke on the "Pre-Retirement program" that will be conducted in Melrose at 340 Main Street, 'nth floor. Five Tuesdays 7:30 to 9:30 P.M, be- ginning April 3® host is $2,00 for the series. The program will offer outstanding speakers on all aspects of retirement, This is for people 30 to 65 years of age. Because of other commitments Mrs, Mathieson will limit her knitting classes to one session every ether weep, therfore leaving 10®00 unused, Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously-. VOTED: To use the unused $10,00 from the knitting class to mail out the new edition of the "Elderberries" which the Council feels is necessary to promote the new programs, The "Elderberries will be mailed the week of March 12, Ther being no futher business and upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VO" D.
