Mr. Gardner announced that a Sixty-Plus Hobby Show would be held on June 24th at the new Boston City Hall. In discussing the matter it was felt that the teachers in our Community Program should be consulted as to the possi- bility of entering in the show some exhibits of the work our older people have been doing, and also thattiis and other points of interest in Boston might be good destinations for 'Irt van trips for the elderly. Mr. Brockv ay, the Executive Director of the "Y" then offered the use of the van, for trips for the elderly all day Tuesdays and Thursdays during July and August. He said that a work--study ItYl worker would be available to drive the van at the cost of 1 per hour in addition to the 150 per rile for the van itself. He also said that when his slides of a trip a group of young people took to Tennessee in the April vacation were developed and if they were good enough, he would be glad to give an illustrated talk to the elderly on the trip. PLr. Brockway left the meeti;%g at this point. There was then a brief discussion of the Summer Program., and Mrs. Beaton said that Mr. Evans had already c~ontaeted Mrs,, Janet Pierce and that after he returned from a trip he was Va k-i ng they would set up a definite schedule. Mr. Gardner stated that he felt that perhaps the Council should con- sider providing more services to the elderly in nursing homes and to other shut-ins, many of whoa are extremely :.Lonely and without mur11 'co take up their time. The matter was discussed and dare Gardner said he wound get in touch with Mrs. Edith Sias to see if she would be interested in taking charge of this work. Mr. Dube said he would try to find industries in Reading with com- puter°s to see if they might offer the use of one so that lists and addressing .stickers might be run off for mailings or other efforts to reach :urger numbers of the elderly in Reading. . Gardner reported that May was Senior Citizen Month and that he would contact the Selectmen about issuing a proclamation and also put some- thing in the Chronicle bringing -the needs of the elderly before the community. Mr. Farnham offered to check with the North Shore Yusic Circle to see if tickets might be secured at reduced prices for the Elderly for some of the plays this summer in view of the fact that the I'D' van would be avail- able for transportation two days a week. It was also suggested that a Summer Bulletin be issued around the end of May listing all summer activities. It was also felt that the van should be used to provide short rides for shut-ins and those in nursing homes. Upon motion duly ?rude and seconded, it was unanimQ44 y voted to ad- journ, and the meeting was adjourned by the Chairman at 10.-00 P.Mg Respectful 1...y c rbmitted, ha" t,iaalie U : eat'orl-'temporary Secretary 2.
