HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-05-20 ad Hoc School Building Committee Minutes. , READING SCHOOL BUILDING COMMITTEE MINUTES MAY 20 1997 THE SCHOOL BUILDING COMMITTEE MET ON MAY 20 1997. THE MEETING WAS CALLED TO ORDER AT 8:05PM IN THE SUPTS CONFERENCEROOM. PRESENT WERE ROBIN DANTONA, HARRY HARUTUNIAN, ROGER SANSTED,RICH RADVILLE, JOE LUPI, BOB GRASSO,MARGARET COWELL, BARBARA POOK AND RUSS GRAHAM. ALSO PRESENT WAS JOHN DOHERTY PRINCIPAL OF THE COOLIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL. THE PURPOSE OF THE MEETING WAS TO INTERVIEW TWO ARCHITECTS FOR THE FEASIBILITY STUDY ON THE COOLIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL. THE CHAIR ASKED JOHN DOHERTY TO PARTICIPATE FUULY IN THE DISCUSSION. THE FIRST ARCHITECT WAS HKT ARCHITECTS INC. THE CHAIR ASKED JOE LUPI TO INTRODUCE THOSE PRESENT. HKT OUTLINED THEIR BACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS TO FUFILL THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE FEASIBILITY STUDY AND PRESENTED RENDEREINGS OF SIMILIAR PROJECTS THEY HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN. THEY HAD VISITED THE COOLIDGE SCHOOL AND FELT THEY HAD MANY IDEAS WHICH WOULD EXPAND SPACE AND ENHANCE THE APPEARANCE OF THE BUILDING. MARGARET COWELL ASKED WHAT THEIR THOUGHTS WERE ON DOING ANY CONSTRUCTION AND OR ALTERATION ON A BUILDING CONSTANTLY IN USE. THEY BELIEVED ANY ACTIVITY COULD BE PHASED IN SUCH A WAY AS TO MINIMIZE THE EFFECT ON THE SCHOOL. DR HARUTUNIAN EMPHASIZED THAT THE STUDY NEEDED TO BE DONE WITH A MENU APPROACH SO THAT IT COULD BE DONE IN WHOLE OR PART DEPENDING ON COST. ROBIN DANTONA STATED THAT THE PROJECT SHOULD BE DONE SO AS TO ANSWER THE BASIC PROBLEMS OF ENROLLMENT AND CREATE SOME PARITY WITH THE NEW PARKER MIDDLE SCHOOL BUT NOT DONE SO AS TO APPROXIMATE THE PARKER WHICH IS BASICALLY A NEW EDIFICE. JOHN DOHERTY ASKED WHAT PROCESS WAS USED BY THE FIRM TO GATHER INFORMATION FOR THE PROJECT AND WHO WAS INCLUDED IN THE PROCESS. THE ARCHITECT SAID THEY BELIEVED THE MORE THE BETTER AND IT WOULD INCLUDE ADMINISTRATORS TEACHERS PTO SCHOOL COMMITTEE AND SCHOOL BLDG COMM. ROGER SANSTED ASKED IF THEY USED AN EDUCATIONAL CONSULTANT IN THEIR PROCESS AND THEY INDICATED THAT THEY HAD ONE AVAILABLE IF NEEDED. DR HARUTUNIAN ASKED ABOUT A TECHNOLOGICAL COMPUTER SPECIALIST AND AGAIN THEY INDICATED ONE WAS AVAILABLE TO THEM IF NEEDED. THE COMMITTEE THANKED THEM FOR THEIR PRESENTATION. THE COMMITTEE AT 9;08 INTERVIEWED A ANTHONY TAPPE & ASSOCIATES. THEY PRESENTED THEIR QUALIFICATIONS AND BACKGROUND AS WELL AS RENDERINGS OF SIMILIAR PROJECTS. THEY ALSO OUTLINED SOME SPECIFIC THOUGHTS THEY HAD AS TO WHAT MIGHT BE DONE AT THE COOLIDGE SCHOOL EMPHASIZING THAT THEY QUICK AND DIRTY OBSERVATIONS. THE SAME PERTINENT QUESTIONS WERE ASKED OF THEM. THEY TOO HAD PAST EXPERIENCES WITH BUILDINGS BEING OPERATIVE WHILE CONSTRUCTION WAS ONGOING AND INDICATED THEY HAD EXPERIENCED NO MAJOR PROBLEMS AS A RESULT. THEY HAD NO PROBLEM WITH THE MENU APPROACH DESIRED AND THEY FULLY UNDERSTOOD THAT THE PROJECT WAS NOT INTENDED TO EMULATE A NEW MIDDLE SCHOOL JUST BUILT. THEY EMPHASIZED THE NEED TO INVOLVE ALL THE COOLIDGE COMMUNITY PARTICULIARY STAFF IN THE PROCESS. THEY HAVE AN EDUCATIONAL CONSULTANT ON BOARD AS WELL AS ACCESS TO A COMPUTER SPECIALIST. THE COMMITTEE THANKED THEM FOR THEIR PRESENTATION. ON MOTION OF ROGER SANSTED SECONDED BU MARGARET COWELL, THE MEETING ADJOURNED AT 10:23PM.
