HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-12-08 ad Hoc Police Station Building Committee MinutesMinutes Police.Station Building Committee December 8, 1997 The Committee met in the Conference Room at the Town Hall, 16 Lowell Street, Reading, Massachusetts at 7:30 p.m. Present were Chair Paul Dustin, Vice Chair Bill Lavoie, Committee members Jack Russell, Edward Marchand, Eric Jason Smith, Robert Cavagnaro, James Cormier, Mike DeBrigard, and Bryan Irwin also present were FinCom Liaison Richard-McDonald, Selectman Bruce MacDonald, Brett Donham from Donham & Sweeney Inc., Richard Marks from Daedalus Projects Inc., and Town Manager Peter Hechenbleikner. On motion by EdwardMarchand seconded by Mike DeBrigard the Police Station Building Committee unanimously accepted the submitted Minutes of the November 20, 1997, meeting. Brett Donham distributed plans and a second draft of space needs. Paul Dustin was concerned with who will -make the final decisionson the newPolice - Building. The Police Station Building Committee is an advisory committee for the Board of Selectmen. The Board of Selectmen will make the final decisions. Project Manager's Report: Richard Marks, Daedalus Projects Inc. reported on the current cost of construction. The cost per sq. ft. is between $155.00 and $160.00. This makes the cost of a 17,000 sq. ft. building $3,500,000.00. The cost for a 20,000 sq. ft. building will be closer to $3.8 million or $4.1 million. Architect's Report: Brett Donham, Donham & Sweeney, Inc., submitted a second draft revising the 17,005 sq. ft. to 20,029 sq. ft. He also submitted a list of space reducing suggestions. He presented 5 schemes with an estimated finished cost of $158.00 per sq. ft. Some of the decisions the committee must make are: how much expansion room is needed, the first floor layout, and which scheme fits the neighborhood best. Police Report: Jim Cormier noted that the communication and security systems are.not included in the cost estimates. Police Chief Edward Marchand. discussed the special security needs of the police station. The location of some of the offices is important in order to have a smooth running operation. Brett Donham will meet with the police to review their space requirements. Selectman Bruce -MacDonald _ Stated the goal is to build the most efficient, flexible, durable, maintenance free building possible. The next Police Station Building Committee meeting will be December 22, 1997, in the Conference Room at the Town Hall. On motion by Mike DeBrigard seconded by Bill Lavoie the Police Station Building Committee voted to adjourn their meeting at 10;20 p.m. by a vote of 9-0-0.
