HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007-01-04 School Committee MinutesReading Public Schools Reading, Massachusetts RECEIVE TOWN CL: 11 to Order 001 FEB 1 P 2= 19 Chair Webb called the regular session to order at 7:33 p.m. at the Coolidge Middle School Multipurpose Room. Present were Ms. Webb, Ms. Gibbs, Mr. Caruso, Mr. Dahl, Mr. McFadden, Mr. Michaud, Superintendent Patrick Schettini, Jr., Director of Human Resource and Finances Mary DeLai, Assistant Superintendent John Doherty, Wood End Principal Richard Davidson, Fin Com Representative Chuck Robinson, Fin Com Representative Hal Torman, RTA President Stan Quinlan, Several budget parents were also present. Chair Webb read the mission of the Reading Public Schools. She also commended the job that Superintendent Schettini, Principal Finigan, and Assistant Principals Gary Hart and Mike Scarpitto did with the opening of the new Reading Memorial High School. Bills and Payrolls Bills and payrolls were circulated to all members of the committee. Citizens' Input There was no citizens' input. Gifts There were no gifts presented this evening. "Qports of Chairman, Liaisons, and Superintendent )erintendent Schettini reported that it has been a very busy few weeks. He commented on the outstanding -ob by all staff in preparing the new Reading Memorial High School for the students. The excitement has been fantastic by staff and students. He also reported that all other schools opened well. Mrs. Gibbs added to Superintendent Schettini's comments about the efficiency of the traffic flow for the RISE Pre-School area. Mr. Dahl also commended the job that faculty and administration have done in a smooth transition from the old building to the new building. School Committee Calendar Mrs. Webb reviewed the calendar for the months of January and February. Mrs. Webb suggested that January l8ch be added as an additional meeting to review the budget. Personnel Mr. Schettini announced that Mr. Gannon will be resigning at the end of the school year. He passed out a memo describing the hiring process that will be used to hire a new Director of Pupil Services. Mrs. Gibbs moved to authorize the Superintendent to conduct a search and select a candidate for the position of Director of Pupil Services for presentation for the School Committee Seconded by Mr. - Caruso. Motionpassed 6-0. _ t Regular Session 2 January 4 2007 Old Business There was no old business this evening. ew Business .superintendent Schettini presented the Superintendent's Recommended FY08 Budget for the areas of Administration, Regular Day, and Other (Health, Athletics, and Co-Curricular) to the Reading School Committee and the community. His presentation included the following: o Acknowledging the budget parents for their involvement in the process. o The District Mission o School Committee Policy on the Annual Budget o Dates for Budget Discussion Meetings o Budget Building Procedure o Three types of budgets (Baseline, Level Service, Recommended) o Per Pupil Comparison Data o Bottom Line o Budget Drivers o What if we were average? o Question and Answers The school committee then reviewed by line item the Administration, Regular Day, and Other budget categories. Mr. Dahl moved to increase the baseline budget line item for contractual services from $9,180 to $21,525 -All committee members commented on the success of the grant writer and the need to increase the services of the grant writer. Some members felt it was not the appropriate time to make changes in to the budget. There will be time to make changes at future meetings. Several committee members commented on the need for additional instructional/curriculum specialists. Mr. Dahl commented that he would like to see additional funding for band and drama. Approval of Minutes Adjourn Mrs. Gibbs moved to go into executive session for the purpose of collective bargaining A roll call vote was taken and passed 6-0. Mrs. Gibbs, Ms Webb, Mr. McFadden, Mr. Dahl,Mr. Caruso and Mr. Michaud.
