HomeMy WebLinkAbout2004-03-08 School Committee Minutes( ' LiW F tol A, t' ~Z Reading School Committee Reading, Massachusetts Regular Session h 8, 2004 Marc CALL TO ORDER Chair Dahl called the regular session to order at 7:40 p.m. in the Superintendent's Conference Room. Present were School Committee Members John Carpenter, Harvey Dahl, Lisa Gibbs, Carl McFadden, Robert Spadafora and Elaine Webb. Also present were Superintendent Schettini and Associate Superintendent Richards. BILLS AND PAYROLLS Bills and Payrolls were circulated for signatures. Chair Dahl welcomed Lisa Gibbs to the School Committee. Chair Dahl commented that the high school drama production entered for competition was excellent. CITIZEN"S INPUT Mr. Ryan stated that an email reached a quorum of School Committee Members unintentionally. Mr. Dahl stated that no violation took place. OLD BUSINESS Ms. Webb moved to accept the Coolidge Middle School Pro'ect for school Purposes. Mr. Spadafora seconded the motion The vote was 6-0. Carpenter. Dahl, Gibbs, McFadden, Spadafora and Webb Chair Dahl stated he was very pleased with Coolidge Middle School. Robert Peirce and Daniel Gorini from Flansburgh Associates gave an overview of the new elementary school. Mr. Gorini explained that the new school would have a "school in the woods" feel to it. The colors would reflect New England in fall. There was discussion regarding the middle school size gym in the new school. Mr. Carpenter asked what the mechanism would be to ensure a middle school size (74 feet x 42 feet) gym. Regular Session -2- March 8, 2004 Ms. Webb moved to have the School Committee authorize Flansburgh Associates to issue a proposal request or an ASI (Architect's Supplemental Instruction) on the new elementary school, reauesting that the General Contractor revise the gym court game lines as presented in the drawing by Flansburgh Associates dated March 8, 2004. The vote was 6-0. Mr. Carpenter, Mr. Dahl, Mrs Gibbs, Mr. McFadden, Mr. Spadafora and Ms. Webb Chair Dahl asked what the cost would be. Mr. Dunlap stated that there would be no increase in cost. Mr. Spadafora clarified that the playground is different from the soccer field. The playground may have to be done privately if there is not enough money in contingencies. Mr. McFadden asked how much lead-time was necessary for the playground. Mr. Dunlap stated there is considerable lead-time for the playground. The equipment has to be ordered, and the site prep takes eight to ten weeks. The Contractor would start in June or July, Chair Dahl stated that the Town Manger would like input on the design/review process. - Ms Webb asked how much the design cost would be. It would cost $12,000 for Flansburgh Associates to design the site including the ground preparation under the play structure. Mr. Spadafora stated that we need to place the playground on a time line and review in one month. It should then become an agenda item to be reviewed. Mr. Dunlap stated that cost estimates came in for the Barrows School building project from Hanscom, Faithful and Gould. The cost estimate for construction is $5,736,006. The estimated cost for hazard material removal is $100,000. At 8:40 Chair Dahl called a five-minute recess. Chair Dahl called the meeting back to order at 8:47. Chair Dahl stated it would be nice to have drawings on site at Barrows. Robert Peirce stated that he would get some drawings over to the Barrows School. Mr. Carpenter asked if there were still the same number of classrooms as originally planned. Mr. Dunlap said the number of classrooms has not changed. The bid documents would be available to pick up on March 26, 2004. Chair Dahl stated that the high schools bid opening is April 6, 2004. Regular Session -3- March 8, 2004 Mr. Dunlap gave an overview of the plan holder's list for the high school project. SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT Superintendent Schettini acknowledged the fine art work from Coolidge Middle School. Superintendent Schettini distributed a copy of an article that appeared in the March 7, 2004 edition of the Boston Globe concerning Adams scholarship. He stated that our students are doing well and could take advantage of this process. Superintendent Schettini will be coming back to the School Committee with recommendations to the discipline policies at a future meeting. Mr. Schettini handed out the 2002-2004 Initiative-Building Projects Chart. As we add new business agenda items we need to reflect back on the initiatives, review and adjust. Mr. Schettini stated with the Barrows students going to the new school we do not need to redistrict yet for the 2004-2005. ADJOURN Mr. Spadafora moved to enter into executive session for the purpose of discussing the deployment of security personnel or devices not to return to regular session Mr. McFadden seconded the motion.
