School Naming Sub Committee Meeting March 18, 2004
Elaine Webb called the School Naming Sub Committee meeting to order at 7:35 p.m. in
the Superintendent's Conference Room. Present were Elaine Webb, Virginia Adams,
Robert Spadafora, George Hines and Paula Perry.
Ms. Webb stated that all the proposed names had been summarized on a green sheet that
she received from Mr. Schettini's Office. The name Robert S. Wells was added to the list
since the last meeting.
CITIZEN'S INPUT
There was no citizen's input.
Ms. Webb stated that the purpose of this meeting was to work together as a committee to
select the best name for the community for the new school. She hoped to select a short
list of three to five names to submit to the Reading School Committee so that they could
vote on the name.
- There was discussion concerning the approach. The committee decided to narrow the
names to ten names based on the following criteria:
Level of Community Involvement
A. Sufficient time span for accomplishments
B. Multifaceted contributions
C. Educational contribution
D. Contribution beyond employment
E. Local significance to Reading
2. Heritage and Historical Significance
A. Names representing cultural diversity
B. Local and regional significance
C. Name to stand the test of time or has stood the test of time
3. Unique Features/ Miscellaneous
4. How will the name stimulate student curiosity and research?
5. Geographical Identification
A. Does the name accurately portray the area?
Ms. Webb stated that the list was officially closed at 8: 10 with twenty- seven names.

There was more discussion regarding the ranking of the names, names with a unique
feature could be given twenty points. There was clarification that contemporary means
the person could be alive or current. The name should be able to stand the test of time.
Names of living people are viable. Mr. Spadafora suggested that they have a
geographical name on the short list. Paula Perry stated that it does not matter if they have
a geographical name on the short list.
The School Naming Sub Committee agreed to meet again on March 31, 2004 at 7:30.
ADJOURN
Mr. S adafora moved to adjourn Mr. Hines seconded the motion the vote was 5-0.
Mrs Adams, Mrs Perry, Mr. Spadafora, Ms. Webb and Mr. Hines.
