Reading School Committee Reading, Ma 01867 CALL TO ORDER 104CEC-1 AII:?2 Chair McFadden called the regular session to order at 7:15 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at Coolidge Middle School. Present were Mr. Spadafora, Ms Webb, Mr. McFadden, Mr. Carpenter, Mr. Dahl and Mrs. Gibbs. Also present were Superintendent Schettini, Associate Superintendent Richards and Director of Human Resources and Finance Mary DeLai. Superintendent Schettini introduced Kristin Morello, the new Food Service Director, Craig Martin, the new Coolidge Middle School Vice Principal and Lynn Dunn, and the Director of Nursing. Superintendent Schettini stated that Mr. Martin was selected to receive NMSA's Distinguished Educator Award. He congratulated Craig and thanked him for his dedication to Coolidge Middle School. The Superintendent stated that Parker Principal Linda Darisse was at Principal's Night at Parker and the Mr. Lyons would introduce the new Parker teachers. Mr. Lyons introduced the new Parker teachers. Mr. Guerrette introduced the new additions to the Killam teachers. Mrs. deGaravilla introduced the new Joshua Eaton teachers with Richard Davidson following with the Birch Meadow teachers. Mrs. Callan introduced the new teacher for Barrows at Wood End and Mr. Doherty introduced the Coolidge teachers. Mr. Finigan introduced the thirteen teachers at the high school and Mr. Gannon introduced three special education teachers. Mr. Schettini stated there were forty-eight new teachers hired. Mr. Schettini thanked the principals for their hard work and dedication in the hiring process. Chair McFadden welcomed everyone. At 8:15 Chair McFadden called a five-minute recess. At 8:20 Mr. McFadden called the meeting back to order. BILLS AND PAYROLLS Bills and Payrolls were circulated for signature. CITIZEN'S INPUT There was none. Regular Session -2- September 13, 2004 Ms. Webb stated she attended a seminar on safety in schools. She stated the seminar made some good points. She made reference to two Boston Globe articles she handed out. GIFTS There were no gifts to report. REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT Superintendent Schettini stated the opening of schools went very well. He visited all the schools with Chair McFadden. He stated it was a great experience. He thanked Karen Callan, Maureen Hanifan and Officer Thomas Murphy for the work they did regarding the Barrows bussing. He went on to say that there were parking issues at Wood End that needed to be worked out. There was discussion on class placements. Superintendent Schettini stated they were working on Administrative Guidelines for Food Allergies. Mr. Schettini stated that the School Committee was posted for September 28a' at Coolidge but there would be no deliberations. PERSONNEL There was conversation concerning negotiation subcommittees. OLD BUSINESS Mr. Dunlap gave a construction progress update. He stated that the removal of all hazardous materials had been completed except the exterior windows. The trench for the new plumbing in existing building was 75% complete. The work on detention/recharge system started at the playing fields. Mr. Spadafora asked about strategies for furniture, fixtures and equipment at Wood End and Barrows. Mr. Dunlap stated the furniture, fixtures and equipment would be bid in February and March for a June or July install. Mr. Dunlap stated there were no change orders at Barrows to date. Mr. Dunlap gave an update on the Wood End School construction schedule. Regular Session -3- September 13, 2004 Mr. McFadden asked about the air circulation at Wood End. Mr. Bird from Flansburgh stated he was in the process of gathering data and analyzing it. Mr. Dunlap gave an overview on the high school building project. There have been five change orders at the high school to date. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Mr. Spadafora moved to accept the minutes of July 12, 2004. Mrs. Gibbs seconded the motion. The vote was 6-0. Mr. Carpenter, Mr. Dahl, Mrs. Gibbs,'Mr. McFadden, Mr. Spadafora and Ms. Webb Mr. Spadafora moved to accept the minutes of July 26, 2004. Mr. Dahl seconded the motion. The vote was 6-0. Mr. Carpenter, Mr. Dahl, Mrs. Gibbs, Mr. McFadden, Mr. Spadafora and Ms. Webb Mr. Spadafora moved to accept the minutes of August 23, 2004. Mrs. Gibbs seconded the motion. The vote was 6-0. Mr. Carpenter, Mr. Dahl, Mrs. Gibbs, Mr. McFadden, Mr. Spadafora and Ms. Webb ADJOURN Mr. Spadafora moved to adjourn at 10:20 p.m. Mrs. Gibbs seconded the motion. The vote was 6-0.
