HomeMy WebLinkAbout2004-12-06 School Committee MinutesReading School Committee Reading, Massachusetts Regular Session December 6, 2004 Call to Order Mr. McFadden called the regular session to order at 7:30 p.m. in the Superintendent's Conference Room. Present were Mrs. Gibbs, Mr. Spadafora, Mr. McFadden, Mr. Carpenter, Ms. Webb and Mr. Dahl. Also present were Superintendent Schettini, Associate Superintendent Richards and Human Resources and Finance Director Mary DeLai and Student Representative Bridget McMillan. Citizen's Input -0 G-, There was no citizen's input. rv Cn _ cn Mr. Robert Adler from Samantha's Harvest thanked Superintendent Schettini fir - volunteering some of his time to Samantha's Harvest. He presented a check in the amount of $2,000 to Victoria Griffin for the purchase software, a digital camera and a die cutter for the RISE Pre School. Mrs. Griffin thanked them for the very generous donation. Mrs. Webb moved to accept a donation from Samantha's Harvest in the amount of $2,000. Mr. Spadafora seconded the motion The vote was 5-0-1. Mr. Dahl, Mr Carpenter, Mr. Spadafora, Ms Webb and Mr. McFadden voting for with Mrs Gibbs abstaining. Chair McFadden acknowledged the hanging artwork from the Reading Memorial High School students. Superintendent's Report Superintendent Schettini stated there would be four elementary redistricting meetings. The Barrows December 8th meeting would be held at Parker Middle School. The Joshua Eaton meeting would be on December 14th. The Killam meeting would be held on December 15 and the Birch Meadow meeting would be on December 16th. All the re- districting meetings will begin at 7:00 a.m. There is additional information at www.readinLydashboard.org. The Reading School Committee will hold a public hearing on January 6th' The School Committee will vote on the plan at the January 27th meeting. Regular Session -2- December 6, 2004 Chair McFadden stated that the four informational meetings at the elementary schools are not School Committee Meetings, they are Superintendent Meetings. School Committee members may be in attendance. Superintendent Schettini, Associate Superintendent Richards and Special Education Director Gannon will attend all meetings. Chair McFadden stated that last Monday Evening in Room C 115, Reading Memorial High School Math teacher, Charles Strout gave a Smart Board presentation showcasing its' capabilities. Since there was no television coverage in Room C115, Mr. McFadden invited Mr. Strout back to do his presentation in the Superintendent's Conference Room so that the audience could see. Chair McFadden thanked Mr. Strout for his presentation. Mrs. Gibbs stated she attended the Reading Symphony performance for children. The children enjoyed a wonderful afternoon. Mr. Scott Dunlap gave an overview of the Reading Memorial High School Building Project. The requisition this month was productive because many milestones were completed. He reviewed the AD Project Manager Report including the daily activity schedule and the full project schedule. Ms. Webb thanked Mr. Shaughnessy for a recent tour of the project. There was discussion concerning the structural fill material under the locker room addition of the field house. Mrs. Gibbs moved to accept the Reading Memorial High School Building, project Change Order #6 for the amount of $65,477.95. Mr. Carpenter seconded the motion. The vote was 5-1. Mr. Dahl, Mrs. Gibbs, Mr. Carpenter, Mr. Spadafora, Ms. Webb voting for with Mr. McFadden voting against Mrs. Gibbs move to authorize the Superintendent to seek payment for Reading Memorial High School building ro'ect Chan a Order #6 through the Town Manager, for reimbursement of $65, 477.95 due to the delay in the removal of the water main. Mr. Spadafora seconded the motion The vote was 6-0. Mr. Dahl, Mrs Gibbs Mr. Car, enter Mr. S adafora Ms. Webb and Mr. McFadden. There was discussion regarding the removal, storage and installation of ETR smoke detectors at the Barrows School. Mrs. Gibbs moved to accept the Barrows School Building project Change Order #5 for the amount of $14,049.00. Mr. Spadafora seconded the motion The vote was 6- 0. Mr. Dahl, Mrs. Gibbs, Mr. Carpenter, Mr. Spadafora, Ms Webb and Mr. McFadden. Regular Session -3- December 6, 2004 Superintendent Schettini stated there would be two significant moves this summer due to the construction. He suggested that school commence after Labor Day giving the Administration the maximum time to get the schools ready. Mrs. Webb moved to accent the 2005-2006 School Calendar as outlined in the Superintendent's memorandum dated December 3, 2004 Mr. Spadafora seconded the motion. The vote was 5-1. Mr. Dahl, Mrs Gibbs, Mr. Carpenter, Mr. Spadafora and Mr. McFadden voting for with Ms. Webb voting against. Superintendent Schettini stated the School Committee would meet on January 3, 6,10,13,24 and 27. Approval of Minutes Ms. Webb moved to approve the Minutes of October 4, 2004 Mr. Carpenter seconded the motion. The vote was 5-0 Mr. Dahl, Mrs Gibbs, Mr. Carpenter, Mr. McFadden and Ms. Webb Ms. Webb moved to approve the Minutes of October 212004. Mrs. Gibbs seconded the motion. _ The vote was 6-0. Mr. Dahl, Mrs Gibbs, Mr. Carpenter, Mr. McFadden, Mr. Spadafora and Ms Webb Ms. Webb moved to approve the Minutes of October 26, 2004 Mr. Carpenter seconded the motion. The vote was 6-0 Mr. Dahl, Mrs Gibbs, Mr. Carpenter, Mr. McFadden, Mr. Spadafora and Ms Webb Ms. Webb moved to approve the Minutes of November 1, 2004 Mr. Carpenter seconded the motion. The vote was 6-0 Mr. Dahl, Mrs Gibbs, Mr. Carpenter, Mr. McFadden, Mr. Snadafora and Ms Webb Ms. Webb moved to approve the Minutes of November 8, 2004 Mrs Gibbs seconded the motion. The vote was 6-0.
