HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005-01-10 School Committee MinutesED LERK G, MASS- Reading School Committee Reading, Massachusetts z0tS ,,,AR 23 o~ 0b Regular Session January 10, 2005 Call to Order Chair McFadden called the regular session to order in the Superintendents Conference Room at 7:35 p.m. Present were Mrs. Gibbs, Ms. Webb, Mr. McFadden, Mr. Carpenter and Mr. Spadafora. Also present were Superintendent Schettini, Associate Superintendent Richards, Human Resources and Finance Director Mary DeLai, FinCom member Richard McDonald and Student Representative Michael O'Brien. Superintendent Schettini welcomed Michael O'Brien and thanked Bridget McMillan for her service. Bills and Payrolls There were no Bills and Payrolls. Citizen's Input There was none. Gifts The Superintendent stated that Mr. Peter Axelson of Garnet Consulting made a generous donation of $2,000 to the Parker Middle School Technology Fund. Ms. Webb left the room. Mrs Gibbs moved to accept the $2000 donation from Peter Axelson, Garnet Consulting to the Parker Middle School Technology Fund. Mr. Spadafora seconded the motion The vote was 4-0 Mr. Spadafora, Mr. McFadden, Mr. Carpenter and Mrs. Gibbs. Ms. Webb returned. There was discussion regarding Tsunami relief. There was discussion about a change in the School Calendar. Mrs Gibbs moved to change the Middle School In-Service Day from April 5, 2005 T T c a F Mr. Carpenter and Mrs. Gibbs. Regular Session -2- January 10, 2005 Superintendent Schettini thanked Mary DeLai and Dennis Richards for their help with the budget. He thanked the budget parents. He stated that he prepared two budgets one with a 4% budget increase and one with a 2% budget increase. Superintendent Schettini gave a presentation of FY06 Budget. He reviewed possible reductions to the recommended Budget. Tonight there would be discussion on the Administration, Maintenance and Health, Athletics and Extra Curricular sections of the budget. Ms. Webb asked about crowd monitors. The Superintendent explained that crowd monitors are teachers who monitor the crowd at school events. A citizen asked about the relationship between spending and test scores. The Superintendent referred him to www.readingdashboard.org. Ms. Webb suggested that the moving of the RISE Pre School to Birch Meadow during the construction would be much safer and a better environment for instruction. Mrs. Gibbs agreed. Mrs. Dorothy Casalaro asked if there would be an increase in the custodial staff at the high school during construction. She was told that there would be the same number of custodians at the high school during FY06. Approval of Minutes Mr. Spadafora moved to approve the minutes of November 15, 2004. Ms. Webb seconded the motion The vote was 5-0. Mrs. Gibbs, Mr. Carpenter, Mr. McFadden, Mr. Spadafora and Ms. Webb Mr. Spadafora moved to approve the minutes of November 29, 2004. Ms. Webb seconded the motion The vote was 5-0. Mrs. Gibbs, Mr. Carpenter, Mr. McFadden, Mr. Spadafora and Ms. Webb Mr. Spadafora moved to approve the minutes of December 14, 2004. Ms. Webb seconded the motion The vote was 5-0 Mrs. Gibbs, Mr. Carpenter, Mr. McFadden, Mr. Spadafora and Ms. Webb Adjourn Mr. Spadafora moved to adiourn Ms Webb seconded the motion.
