Reading School Committee Reading, Massachusetts ~,dBs tjA ° l I P Q: 3 Regular Session March 14, 2005 Call to Order Chair McFadden called the School Committee to order at 7:40 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room at Coolidge Middle School. Present were Mr. Carpenter, Mr. Dahl, Mrs. Gibbs, Mr. McFadden and Ms. Webb. Also present were Superintendent Schettini, Associate Superintendent Richards, Director of Human Resources and Finance Mary DeLai and Student Representative, Michael O'Brien. Mr. Shubert called the Selectmen to order, present were Mrs. Woods, Mrs. Anthony, Mr. Duffy, and Mr. Shubert. The FinCom did not have a quorum. Bills and Payrolls Bills and Payrolls were circulated for signature. Citizen's Input There was no Citizen's Input. Gifts There were no gifts. Town Manger Peter Hechenbleikner stated that last Thursday; Office Charles Lentini passed away. The wake was today and the funeral is tomorrow. The Town would mourn the loss of Officer Lentini. He went on to mention the passing of Lisa O'Brien's husband. Ms. Karen Storti, chairperson of the Substance Abuse Prevention Advisory Council (SAPAC), Mr. William Carrick, Vice Chair and Mark Staniul gave a presentation outlining what and who SAPAC is, their purpose and their goals. There was discussion about how difficult it is to get help for adolescents with drug issues. Superintendent Schettini stated that if we reach one child then the program is a success. He stated that professional development for counselors making a connection with students is very important. Regular Session -2- March 14, 2005 Mrs. Fiore stated that we are lucky to have such experts in our community. One out of every five people has an addiction to something. Adjourn Selectmen Mrs. Woods moved to adiourn for the Selectmen Mrs Anthony seconded the motion the vote was 4-0. Mrs. Woods, Mrs Anthony, Mr. Duffy and Mr. Shubert Chair McFadden called a five-minute recess. Mr. McFadden called the School Committee back to order at 9:20 p.m. Report of the Superintendent Superintendent Schettini reviewed a list of accomplishments. The Drama Club finished first in the preliminary round. The next round is March 19, 2005. The Gymnastics Team placed second in the States. Kim O'Donnell placed first in state overall. The Gymnastics Team, Girls and Boys Track, Boys Hockey and Wrestling were all Middlesex League Champions. At Parker Middle School the play, "Tied to the Tracks" was a big success this past weekend. There was a celebration of Middle School Week with a Parent Visitation Day. At Coolidge, several students participated in the National History Day regional competition and did very well. Understanding Disabilities is sponsoring a presentation by Boston University graduate Travis Roy at both middle schools tomorrow. Mary DeLai gave an overview of the Capital Plan Ms. Webb moved to accent and support the FY2006-2010 Capital Plan as presented tonight and dated March 14, 2005 Mr. Carpenter seconded the motion The vote was 5-0. Mr. Carpenter, Mr. Dahl, Mrs Gibbs, Mr. McFadden and Ms Webb Superintendent Schettini stated that the FinCom is meeting on Wednesday night. Ms. Webb moved to reauest Town Meeting, at their 2005 Annual Meeting, in April to transfer funds from the School Department FY05 budget to the RMHS Building Protect ($500,000) and the Barrows Building Proiect ($350,000) Mrs Gibbs seconded the motion The vote was 5-0. Mr. Dahl, Mr. McFadden, Mr. Carpenter, Mrs. Gibbs and Ms. Webb Regular Session -3- March 14, 2005 - A member asked if there was a warrant article on the culvert for $350,000. The Superintendent stated there was a warrant article. Approval of Minutes Mr. Carpenter moved to approve the minutes of January 10, 2005 Mr. Dahl seconded the motion. The vote was 5-0. Mr. Dahl Mr. McFadden Mr. Carpenter, Mrs. Gibbs and Ms. Webb Mr. Carpenter moved to approve the minutes of January 24, 2005 Mrs Gibbs seconded the motion. The vote was 5-0. Mr. Dahl Mr. McFadden Mr. Carpenter, Mrs. Gibbs and Ms. Webb Mr. Carpenter moved to approve the minutes of January 27, 2005 Mrs Gibbs seconded the motion. The vote was 5-0. Mr. Dahl Mr. McFadden Mr. Carpenter, Mrs. Gibbs and Ms. Webb Mr. Carpenter moved to approve the minutes of February 7, 2005 Mrs Gibbs seconded the motion. The vote was 5-0. Mr. Dahl Mr. McFadden Mr. Carpenter, Mrs. Gibbs and Ms. Webb f- Adjourn Ms. Webb moved to adiourn for the School Committee to enter into executive session not to return to regular session for the purpose of negotiation strategies Mrs. Gibbs seconded the motion.
