Regular Session May 23, 2005
Call to Order
Chair McFadden called the regular School Committee to order at 7:32 p.m. in the Parker
Middle School Multi-Purpose Room. Present were Mr. Dahl, Mr. McFadden, Ms. Webb,
Mr. Carpenter, Mrs. Gibbs and Mr. Spadafora. Also present were Superintendent
Schettini, Associate Superintendent Richards and Director of Human Resources and
Finance, Mary DeLai.
Bills and Payrolls
Bills and Payrolls were circulated for signature.
Citizen's Input
There was no Citizen's Input.
Gifts
There were no gifts.
New Business
Superintendent Schettini introduced Associate Superintendent Richards for his last
curriculum presentation in Reading.
Associate Superintendent Richards introduced Linda Darisse, Principal of Parker Middle
School and John Fiore, Social Studies Teacher at Reading Memorial High School. Mrs.
Darisse gave an overview of the of middle school social studies curriculum. She stated
that S"' grade United States History course would not be the same as the history course in
grade nine.
Mr. Fiore stated that at the high school they have made tremendous progress to fulfill
department goals concerning curriculum revisions. Teachers have attended a social
studies conference.
Associate Superintendent Richards stated that it is a common sence approach rather than
the approach that is packaged by book companies.
Ms. Webb stated that in middle school, all grades hold mock elections and debates. She

Mr. Spadafora stated the K-12 social studies curriculum is outlined very nicely.
Superintendent Schettini stated that the social studies framework is now stable. The
Asian and Chinese World Studies are very important and we have incorporated them into
the curriculum even though it is not yet part of the framework.
Mrs. Callan gave an overview of K-5 social studies curriculum. and framework changes.
Ellen Commito, Mark Linehan and Paul Guidetti gave positive feedback regarding the
"Skillful Teacher" course.
Mr. Spadafora stated it was a great presentation.
Mr. Nihan gave an overview of curriculum accomplishments using technology for
assessment.
Mr. Finigan introduced Mrs. Jane Darveau, Director of Guidance at Reading Memorial
High School. Mrs. Darveau described the four major categories in the Guidance
Department, Personal Counseling, Academic Counseling, Career Counseling and Post
Secondary School Counseling.
Mr. McFadden thanked Mrs. Darveau.
Mr. Joseph Cain gave an overview of Technology.
Mary DeLai gave an overview of outsourcing of Janitorial Services. She stated that it
was a mandate to save the district money. She has been reviewing the delivery of
custodial services. She suggested that they hire a private vendor to provide some or all of
the cleaning.
Mr. Spadafora moved to support the process of outsourcing Janitorial Services at
Reading Memorial High School as outlined in the Superintendent' memorandum
dated May 19, 2005 Mr. Carpenter seconded the motion. The vote was 5-0. Mr.
Dahl had left the room Mr. McFadden, Mr Spadafora, Ms. Webb, Mr. Carpenter
and Mrs. Gibbs.
Superintendent Schettini explained that he went through all of the line items in the budget
with Mr. Foley, Town Accountant.
Ms Webb moved that the $350,000 transferred to the Barrow's Building Proiect
and the $500,000 transferred to the Reading Memorial High School Building Project
approval by Town Meeting under Article 6 on April 28, 2005 be funded from the
Regular Day segment of the School Department's Budget Mr. Spadafora seconded

the motion. The vote was 6-0. Mr. Carpenter, Mr. Dahl, Mr. McFadden, Mrs
Gibbs, Ms. Webb and Mr. Spadafora
Adjourn
Mr. Spadafora move to enter into Executive Session for the purpose of conducting
strategy sessions in preparation for negotiations not to return to regular session Ms
Webb seconded the motion. The roll call vote was 6-0. Mrs. Lisa Gibbs Ms. Elaine
Webb, Mr. Carl McFadden, Mr. Pete Dahl Mr. John Carpenter and Mr. Robert
Spadafora

Executive Session May 23, 2005
Call to Order
Chair McFadden called the executive session to order. Present were Mr. Pete Dahl, Mr.
Carl McFadden, Mr. Rob Spadafora, Ms. Elaine Webb, Mr. Carpenter and Mrs. Lisa
Gibbs. Also present were Superintendent Schettini, Associate Superintendent Richards
and Director of Human Resources and Finance, Mary DeLai.
There was discussion regarding negotiation strategies.
Adjourn
Mr. Spadafora moved to adiourn Mrs Gibbs seconded the motion. The roll call
vote was 6-0 Mr. Pete Dahl, Mr. Carl McFadden, Mr. John Carpenter, Mr. Robert
Spadafora, Ms. Elaine Webb and Mrs. Lisa Gibbs.
