Reading School Committee LUu , 0jc SE P J' € ! ± P 1 u Reading, Massachusetts Regular Session June 6, 2005 Call to Order Chair McFadden called the School Committee to order at 6:02 p.m. in the Reading Memorial High School Guidance Conference Room. Present were Mr. Dahl, Mr. McFadden, Ms. Webb, Mr. Carpenter, Mrs. Gibbs and Mr. Spadafora. Also present were Superintendent Schettini and Director of Human Resources and Finance, Mary DeLai Bills and Payrolls Bills and Payrolls were circulated for signature. Citizen's Input There was no Citizen's Input. Gifts There were no gifts. Report from the Superintendent Superintendent Schettini stated that the Reading Scholarship evening was a success with $120,000 in scholarships awarded. He went on to say that the Reading Memorial High School graduation was excellent with a large class of 302 students. Mrs. Gibbs stated she attended the Pillars of Character Assembly at Killam. It was exciting to see such enthusiasm in the young students. She stated that the RISE preschool was having their spring show on June 13th at 11:00 a.m. Chair McFadden then turned the meeting over to Superintendent Schettini. Mr. Dahl stated that this past year had been a very difficult and challenging year for the School Committee. They had to deal with re-districting, one building opening and two buildings under construction. He stated that he thought Carl McFadden did an exceptional job as Chairman of the Committee. He stated the Superintendent did an excellent job getting through some tough issues this year. _Mrs Gibbs made a motion to nominate Mr. Spadafora as School Committee Chair. Mr. Carpenter seconded the motion. The vote was 6-0. Mr. Carpenter, Mr. Dahl, Mr. McFadden, Ms. Webb, Mrs. Gibbs and Mr. Spadafora Regular Session -2- June 6, 2005 Mrs. Gibbs made a motion to nominate Ms. Webb as School Committee Vice Chair. Mr. McFadden seconded the motion. The vote was 6-0 Mr. Carpenter, Mr. Dahl, Mr. McFadden, Ms. Webb, Mrs. Gibbs and Mr. Spadafora Mr. Carpenter stated that Ms. Webb tackles many issues. He stated that she had an impressive resume, as well as, being a mother of four sons. He approves of her nomination. Mrs. Gibbs stated that Ms. Webb is a pillar of the community. She stated that Ms. Webb works very hard for children. There was discussion regarding the School Committee summer calendar. Mr. Carpenter stated it was a mistake to go a month without meeting. Mr. Dahl stated they needed a series of building update. Chair Spadafora suggested that all members email their vacation schedules to Mrs. Engelson for July and August. Superintendent Schettini stated they needed to meet regarding policy changes and goal setting. Chair Spadafora stated there would be a School Committee meeting on June 20, 2005.
