COMMUNITY PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION
MINUTES OF MAY 8, 1997
A meeting of the Community Planning and Development Commission of the Town of Reading
was held in Room 218 of the Reading Memorial High School, 64 Oakland Road in Reading,
Massachusetts on May 8, 1997. In attendance were Susan DeMatteo, Chair; Michael Flammia,
Commission Secretary, and Member Bryan Irwin. Also present was Town Planner Jonathan
Edwards. The meeting was called to order at 6:32PM.
The ByLaw Committee met jointly with CPDC.
PUBLIC HEARING - Article 9 (former Article 7) of the warrant for the Special Town Meeting
to be held 5/8/97 to amend the Reading Zoning Map so that property at 49-67 Pleasant Street
(Senior Center & Old Police Station) would be rezoned from Residential A-40 to Business B.
Town Planner Jonathan Edwards and Town Manager Peter Hechenbleikner presented
background, including a possible trade with the Eastern Middlesex Board of Realtors of their
property at 13 Union Street (prospective site for a new Police Station) for the older portion of the
existing Police Station.
Article 8 on this warrant is to authorize the transfer of the Old Police Station only to the Eastern
Middlesex Board of Realtors.
Betty Cronin expressed concern about some other potential use subsequent to the Board of
Realtor's use of the site. Mr. Flammia expressed the same concern.
The Commission voted 3:0 to approve a motion by Mr. Flarmnia, seconded by Mr. Irwin, to close
the Public Hearing.
The Commission voted 3:0 to approve a motion by Mr. Flammia, seconded by Mr. Irwin, to
recommend to Town Meeting that it approve the subject matter of Article 9, on the condition that
Town Meeting has approved Article 4, to acquire the entirety of 13 Union Street.
ADJOURNMENT
At 7:16PM a motion was made and seconded to adjourn and the Commission voted unanimously
to do so.
