Discussion:
We discussed and reviewed the presentation to the BOS, all agree that it went very well
and that the BOS were very impressed.
Further work by the NAG Committee may be funding, setting the standards of trails and
boardwalks, as well as the need for a volunteer group or groups to get involved.
Bob Weggel is a retired Reading resident who has taken classes in trail building and
maintenance and is interested in participating in the Northern Area Greenway trail
development. A few questions that came up when building a boardwalk, how far
down do you have to dig for posts? How do you effectively anchor posts in the ground?
Peter Coumounduros is a member of the Friends of Reading Recreation committee. The
"Friends" are exploring and are interested in the possibility of marking trails, mapping
trails, clearing trails and cleanup of the Town Forest. Their group organized a road race
through the Town Forest last year and saw the need for trail markers. They are planning
a clean up day at the Town Forest in the near future.
We discussed trail surfaces, log cabin uses and decided it best to keep the BOS
suggestions in mind but to continue working with NAG members' suggestions and
opinions.
Chris Bosco is a Scout who wants to work on the boardwalk in Zone D establishing
designs and the layout only. Other groups would then take over the fundraising, building
and completion of the project.
Charles suggested the NAG Committee do a presentation to the Scouts (3 groups). He
explained the logistics and challenges of Scouts taking on projects which can be
extensive.
Discussion about the benefits of posting maps at the entrances and at trail heads, along
with posting markers.
Friends of Reading Recreation will be participating in the Town Day on June 30, 2007
and Peter suggested NAG may want to do the same in order to bring some attention to the
project.
Will explained that the Conservation Commission will give itself its own permit so that
when the Scouts, the NAG Committee or Friends of Reading Recreation want to do a
project there will be a blanket Order of Conditions which will be helpful.
The next meeting will be Thursday, April 5, 2007 @ 7:30 PM
The meeting adjourned at 9:00 PM Voted 6-0.
Respectfully submitted,
Joan Hoyt
