Issues discussed:
•
Developing a concrete Greenway action plan including cost estimates by zone
Completing Mark's Excel spreadsheet
Gary has a contact who can provide cost estimates for boardwalk
•
Position of boardwalk in zone D (Alligator Alley)
Minimizing swamp crossing, rotting, and distance of boarwalk
Possibility of a site visit w/map
Last boardwalk was damaged by ATV
•
Using existing fire roads for ADA
Cinder can be used to level existing fire roads
•
Boardwalks will be required for zones D/F/0-P/N
Boardwalk may be needed where 0 meets Main St. due to steep pitch if street crossing is
placed there
•
Battle Road in Lexington has similar boardwalk needed for NW passage
Four foot width is typically required for boardwalk to allow for two-way traffic
•
Cutting new trails required for H2-H3/Q/N
•
Colin Bailey - Scout who will head project to build boardwalk and bridge in zone N3
•
Site visit to work out specific route for H2-H3
Wetlands in H2/H3 may require boardwalk
•
Trail clearing 0 is in good shape
•
Encouraging town to purchase parcel at J1
J2 trail would require clearing
•
Mapping and signing trails
Fells has standard signage
Drilled-in higher up on a tree a good option
Posts and lower tree signs subject to theft/vandalism
Kiosks for greenway map
Marking trails by either number or color
Distances of trails on maps
Naming of trails as fundraising opportunity
Marking/signing trails first, then developing a map
Reference: "Complete Guide to Trail Building and Maintenance", Carl Demrow & David
Salisbury, AMC, ISBN 1-878239-54-6
Pressure treated cedar/pine good for signs
Book titled "Maps of New England" already has some names of trails in Town Forest
•
Suggest priorities for action plan
1. Est. costs for boardwalk
2. Est. costs for clearing new trails
3. Signage/Marking,
4. Improving existing trails
• Improving trails for future work
Zone M in Bare Meadow
Wet spots
Entrance to Bare Meadow (deep truck tire tracks)
• Friends of Reading Rec. for both trail cleanup project and small trail clearing/improvement
projects
• Assessing accessibility of trails, defining use of trails, defining trails standards
• Kim will make map of Town Forest for NAG to mark trails
Use of GPS or use of aerial photos to show trails
• Creating objectives by zone
A/B should be one unit
A/B is good candidate for ADA access
• Focusing on developing main trail thread through Greenway vs. whole hubs
• Scouts best offered defined projects rather than maintenance
Providing maps to all Scout Masters with available projects
• Mark will contact Ranger from Fells to obtain cost estimates for signage
• Gary will obtain cost estimates for boardwalk
• Dave will walk zone Q to make assessment of it
