Reading Substance Abuse Prevention Advisory Council
Minutes
December 17, 1998
Chairman, John Costigan, called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM. at the Reading Public Library
Conference Room. Those present included: Cathy Kosta, Sandy Michaud, Jane Fiore, Bill
Carrick, Dale Merrill, Dave Bryant, Suzie Kelley, Dave Stamatis and new member Michael
Lucey and John Costigan.
Excused: Leone Sullivan, Tenley Hart Rev. Jean Russo-Parks
Absent: David LiBassi, Melissa Pucci
Minutes of November 19, 1998 were read and approved 8:0:0.
Housing Keeping business was attended - verification of addresses and phone numbers of all
council members. Mike Lucey was introduced to the council and welcomed.
Reports:
Youth Risk Behavior Survey presentation to the Selectmen was reported by Sandy Michaud.
The results were accepted with interest by the selectmen. Mrs. Anthony recommended increasing
questions on eating disorders. The major concern by Mr. MacDonald and Mrs. Hoyt were the
results on sexual behaviors and suicide and depression. The report to the selectmen included the
council's dedication to address the issues in community education programming and increase
awareness within school administration and faculty. Mr. Nester, Selectmen recommended
doubling the effort of communicating with the community when the next survey is undertaken.
John Costigan thanked Marc and Jane for the letter and mailing to all the parents of secondary
level students regarding the survey results.
Dale Merrill noted the survey results had not appeared on the Reading homepage as yet. Jane
will place the results on the home page after the holidays. Dale would also like the council to
recommend increase in funding toward curricula dealing with risky behavior. Council discussion
followed.
Comments from parents were positive. Sandy, Bill and John have had discussion with parents
on the survey. This is a positive result.
The survey will be repeated in two years. Harry Harutunian, Superintendent of Schools has
invited Jane and Marc to present the results to the principals and faculty of the secondary schools
after school vacation.
Bill Carrick suggested the YRBS be discussed at every Council meeting to keep the council
focused on the results. All were in agreement.
Recommendation for the next survey. Increase publication of the process, increase training of the
monitors and increase communication after the results h
