Jean-Russo Parks Amy Rosenblatt (arrived @ 8:05 PM), Mike Lucey (arrived @ 8:10 PM) Excused: Jane Fiore (Ill) 7:45 Meeting called to order Correction of minutes from last meeting by Sandy Michaud 1) Minutes did not reflect that Amy Rosenblatt took a copy of survey to work and had it Reviewed by her executive director of Project COPE. He found the survey to be sound. 2) Last meeting a number of citizens had abruptly left the meeting dissatisfied with their Inability to provide input to our meeting. They did not understand that they would have time for input after the council had its discussion. Motion by Sandy Michaud to approve amended above, second by Bill Carrick Vote 8-0-0 7:55 PM Spelling Bee Update Bill Carrick did some research on this. There are different options on doing this. Ex: early elementary grades, ? teens. Need flyers, order spelling lists via Internet at low cost ($20.00). This can't be a fundraiser d/t conflicts. Sandy recommended intergenerational spelling bee. Action: d/t time constraints, plan this for year 2001 and ? trivial pursuit-type contest. 8:15 PM Drug-Free Week a) Skate - March 12, 6-8 PM. John Costigan will contact Ed Paduto at rink. b) Pool - Mike Hanifan reports that the swim will be free! Date is March 12, 3-4 PM. YMCA pool rules need to go out. Mandatory swim caps strictly enforced. Advertise for the swim - Advocate? Debbie McCulley-write an article in the Daily Times for Reading Notes, Reading Web Page, cable. Tickets could go on the same page as the pool rules at the bottom to save paper. c) Health Fair - The DPW will be cleaning up after the fair this year due to the amount of physical work needed and lack of support for this part of the fair. 8:25 PM Drafting Letter for Cable TV Dale Merrill drafted letter; council reviewed it and after some editing, motioned by Sandy Michaud, second by John Costigan Vote 10-0 8:50 PM New Business Sandy Michaud - Approximately 23 Peer Leaders at CMS are re-evaluating the core values in the student handbook. They are doing survey of faculty, students, parents and the top five core values will be what the students should strive to live by. Current values in student handbook are difficult to understand. At PMS some students spent weekend at Gordon Collr for team leadership building. Mike Hanifan - Highschool update. Will be going to 5 graders with DARE Officer Leone Sullivan. Trying to get into PMS, scheduling problems. 9:00 PM YRBS Mike Lucey - YRBS is on the agenda at PMS, RMHS PTO meetings. Mike called Carol Goodnow-DOE, Mass Coordinator YRBS. Their conversation reports the following (a,b,c) according to discussion: a) Survey has analytical/administrative deficiencies b) No Middle School YRBS c) Parental resistance. To address this, the survey can be curbed/altered - Council was told by Sharmen at Mass Prevention Center this could not be done. Conflicting information about the survey. d) There is a community meeting ensuing of 40-60 citizens to gather to discuss the YRBS. Mike will be attending this meeting. Several council members asked to be invited to this meeting as well. e) Re: the highschool survey-he wants it changed 9:25 PM Bill Carrick - Where are we going with this? The Council recommended lst month to revise the YRBS in the middle schools if this could not be done. If not, don't do YRBS at the 6 h grade level. 9:30 PM General Discussion Council wants more information and time to think about all of this. Council recommended to Mike Lucey to: 1) Call Sharmeen 2) Have a meeting with Dr. Harutunian Motion made by Mike Lucey to have letter from Carol Goodnow entered into minutes, second by John Costigan. 10:05 Motion to Adjourn by Dale Merrill, second by Sandy Michaud Respectfully submitted, c'c, Catherine Kosta
