Harutunian Ann Doyle From: Michael Lucey 4/09/00 RE: Minutes of the March Meeting Vote Change Disgusting Disgraceful Shameful ~-hese words summarize my reaction to the minutes 1 received over the weekend at purports to record the difficult and emotional meeting of last month. To somehow identify Mrs. Doyle's outburst with anything other then the insults she was forced to endure over months of meetings culminating in the Chairman of the committee characterizing the concerned parents that she, and 1, represent as a "splinter group", is disgusting. To then use that same insult as an official characterization of this group in the minutes exposes thehorrific- bias -of:the secretary, the committee Chair and perhaps the committee in general.,: against those parents who have tried to make their concerns known. These parents have attended meetings where they have been denied even the simple courtesy of minor agenda adjustments and so been forced to sit through hours of mundane committee business. Meetings where their concerns have been met with threats of removal by the "constable". And later meetings that could not begin until the formal reading of the "constable" threat. Meetings where their frustration at not being heard was so great, and hopes of anything beyond patronizing attention from the committee so dim, they just left. And this after I have heard for wo years the incessant whining about the lack of community involvement. E hen to imply that Mrs. Doyle's outburst was in any way related, or even proximate, to comments by the student members of the committee, a fictional image that can only have been contrived to magnify Mrs. Doyle's part in an mailbox:/Hard%20drive/System%20Folder/ Preferences: Netscape%20Users/ u - 00 Meeting Minutes, Vote Change admittedly disappointing scene, is again disgusting. Disgraceful: If these minutes are allowed to stand without recognizing the 3m1»ittee's complicity in creating the toxic environment with regard to itipns with these parents. (Reference last weeks hand out: "The shall' nge".) Shameful: The absolute absence of effort to understand and work with these parents. I accept my responsibility and am ashamed of the laziness that it reveals. Shameful: That this group of 20 has decided that the parents who have expressed their concerns are to be marginalized as a small coup of vocalI parents who simply did not want the CDC survey to be given at all." Imputing motives on those that have stepped forward and then dismissing them becat'se of their size. The arrogance is sickening. I am wholly ashamed to be a pard of any organization the dismisses any contrary opinion simply based on the p4rceived size of the opposition. Members of this committee should ask them9elves if they believe Reading would be better served by valuing only the opinion of the majority. Thankfully the disposition of the Reading survey is now out of the hands of this committee. I will react to my own part in this disgrace by doing what I n to insure that the concerns of the parents of Reading are honestly °flly considered. Now,what does this committee do? Any organization of value step black and take stock of it's contribution. What 'Contribution has this committee made to the town of Reading this year? I ask this not as a rhetorical question but as an opportunity for this com m ittee to justify itself. The question will be part of the minutes of the next meeting. I hope there will be an answer as well, I am officially changing my vote to administer the Nigh School survey in it's preset form to NO, 1 expgct this letter to become a part of the official minutes of the appropriate meeting, March or April, and will provide the secretary with a hard gopy. I ask the Chairman to please forward this letter to others on the committee ,that ale missing from my list. iich'el Lucey, 4/09/00 mailbox:/Hard%20drive/System%20FOlder/ Preferences/Netscape%20Users/ will on occasion n;~ge: I.
