MEETING MINUTES -JANUARY 16, 2003
MEMBERS PRESENT- Bill Carrick, Sandy Michaud, Bob Brown, Nicole LeBlanc,
Dale Merrill, Karyn Storti, Jane Fiore (liaison)
MEMBERS ABSENT - Alex Rowan, Lisa DiTrapano, Gary Nihan, Matt Edson,
George Hines
CALL TO ORDER - 7.55 PM
Meeting minutes from December ineeting distributed. Approval was tabled.
PUBLIC INPUT - None
OLD BUSINESS -Publications/Correspondence review of member list, goals, list of
meeting dates for 2003, e-mail from Bob Brown regarding clergy interest in. chaperoning
dances at the high school. Jane Fiore will follow up with high school principal. Several
articles, interviews and notices of training sesions were reviewed as well.
Safe Homes Program- Discussion of reviving Safe Homes in Reading which was in
effect in 1995. Possibility of recommending it to the School Department to implement as
lack of funds is a problem for us. Jane will draft information statement to hand out at
January 28 panel discussion to see if we can generate interest in the community to restart
the Safe Homes program. Sandy made motion and it was seconded and carried..
Upcoming Panel Discussion on Illegal Drug Use - Jane has mission and target audience,
invitees, press release, etc. Members of the Council should report to the Senior Center at
7PM on January 28.
SCHOOL REPORT - No school report.
STUDENT REPORT - Nicole LeBlanc reported that the earlier plan to lock the girls'
bathroom doors was rejected. Smoking in bathrooms is still not as much a problem this
year as it was last year.
OTHER - Initial discussion of the next program we can present. Jane Fiore has contact
with Larry Berkowitz who deals in adolescent substance abuse issues. He could lead a
panel discussion on normal vs. high risk behavior for maybe March or April. Several
ideas thrown out for consideration. Further discussion will take place at our next
meeting.
