HomeMy WebLinkAbout2003-02-13 Substance Abuse Prevention Advisory Council MinutesA/ L Reading Substance Abuse Prevention Advisory Council J'- Minutes for meeting held on February 13, 2003 'A' Call to Order: 7:31PM Members Present: Lisa DiTrapono, Karyn Storti, John Russo, Gary Nihan, Matt Edson, Alex Rowen, Robert Brown, Liaison Jane Fiore. Minutes from January distributed. Discussion of approving January and December minute. Minutes from January and December approved. Introduction made to Mr. Russo. Public Input: None Old Business: Safe Homes Program Meeting with Mr. Orlando about Safe Homes, he's all set with it and likes the idea. It needs to be discussed with Mr. Harutunia and the PTO. The next newsletter will have something about the program. The deadline will be April 1 to return the volunteer forms. A book will be printed by the company and high school has a contract with, it will then be sent off to all those who have volunteered for the program. Discussion of weather towns around Reading should be part of the program. It will be paid for by the PTO, a town discretionary fund, and grant form the Board of Health. If the book can be published by June it will be part of the prom campaign, but if not, then by September and as a part of Orientation and part of the student Handbook. Hopefully, we will be able to get the system computerized. Prevention Workshop special guest Larry Berkowitz, Licensed psychologist, March 25, 2003 at the Senior Center. Try to get social worker and psychiatrist. Talk on parenting and how to discuss drugs and alcohol with childern , to prevent abuse in adolescents. Call made to McLean's hospital adolescent unit and eating disorder unit, however, call not return. The meeting will target middle school age children, and especially geared towards 12 - 14 yaer olds. It will probably get a large response. Notice should be sent home with middle school students. Flyers will be distributed: Mr. Nihan at Austin Prep, Ms. Storti in store windows, Mrs. Fiore at the lower schools, Nichole at high school. At the meeting, coffee will be brought by Bill, and brownies by Sandy. Other: Discussion of the police return to the council. How are safe homes safe? Explaination for taking someone off the safe homes list. It means that the person needs to work on their parenting skills. The safe homes list should be given to Matt in order to check the families. Maybe there should be some kind of flag on the application. School report: The smoking situation at the high school is getting better. Though the custodians say the are still problems, the amount of kids that are smoking in school is going down. Student Report: New clean start program recently began, many student are part of it. No news of post-prom parties as of yet.
