CALLED TO ORDER- 8:23 PM LID;
MEMBERS PRESENT - Bill Carrick, Dale Merrill, Alex Rowen, Bob Brown, Karyn Storti,
Gary Nihan, Jane Fiore
REVIEW OF MINUTES - Minutes of March 20, 2003 meeting reviewed and approved.
PUBLIC INPUT - None
PUBLICATIONS/ CORRESPONDENCE - Packets sent by Jane included an article on the
most recent panel discussion we sponsored. There was only one member of the public
that attended.
SCHOOL REPORT - Alex and other peer leaders are preparing a "survival kit" for
incoming freshmen and are looking for items to include. Jane will provide information
on Safe Homes program. Bathrooms at high school are "icky" again. Smoking is
ongoing but less than before. Same with dances. Bill will write a letter to the principal
complimenting him on the efforts to reduce smoking.
GRANT - According to Jane there is little, if any, chance of receiving the Drug Free
Schools grant this year. There is no way to meet the criteria and/or monitor the
application so it makes no sense to even apply.
DISCUSSION OF MAY EDUCATION PROGRAM - As mentioned above, there was only
one attendee. Discussion turned to increasing attendance. Suggestions were made of
linking future panels to ready made audiences such as PTO's or other school-based
events. Alex suggested holding 2 programs and pushing the second one at the first one.
Dale suggested a call-in program on RCTV. Bill stated that reactive programs get a
large turnout. Gary suggested a short program for freshmen parents and also to check
into the parenting program at Parker Middle School. Overall, we attained our goal of
sponsoring three programs. One was heavily attended and two were not. The
selectmen did get involved and did attend. The programs were listed in the Town
Manager's weekly notes to staff. Bob Brown made a motion for SAPAC to organize a
program with assistance from the Board of Health to be held in the aftermath of any
incident in our town. This passed unanimously.
OTHER - A new member, Mark Staniul, was just appointed to our group. Our quorum
will now stand at six. Dale reports that there are no funds to administer the Youth Risk
Behavior Survey this corning year.
ADJOURNED - 9:12 PM
Respectfully submitted,
Karyn A. Storti
