Selectmen's Meeting George Kiimarx has not been interviewed yet. Peter Hechenbleikner wants to address issues regarding the Hazardous Waste Committee first. Bob had written a letter suggesting that the Solid Waste Committee and Hazardous Waste Committee combine prior to the August 17"' Selectmen's meeting. At the meeting, however, Bob instead made a pitch to rename the Hazardous Waste Committee `Hazardous Waste Site Committee'. Lynda will call George Hines (SWAC's new Selectperson representative) and Bob will call Sally regarding having George appointed as soon as possible. Reading's Hidden Treasure Lynda called Kay to request the disc and changes she has in her possession. Jennifer volunteered to make changes to the disc or retype book if necessary. Jean will proofread the book. Lynda will send a letter to Kay stressing the urgency of a timely return of materials to the committee. Junior of Edition of Hidden Treasures The committee decided to forget about this project for now. MRIP Reading is receiving an additional $220.00 for the FY99 Phase 2 due to a surplus in funds according, to the August newsletter from Sharon Kashida. A graph showing Recycling Rate by Communities (included in the newsletter) depicted Reading's rate with a significant increase during the 96-97 time frame and leveling off during 97-98. Bob noted that a large part of future MRIP requirements for the towns will be the Buy Recycled percentage. Linda will contact Jeff griffin's replacement to invite him to a SWAG meeting and ask him to consider purchasing school supplies containing recycled materials. Schools constitute a large percentage of the town's purchases. Lexington Household Hazardous Waste Facility The Lexington facility is open to residents from other towns for a fee or free if the town is a "guest community". Ted would need to negotiate the terms of becoming a "guest community". Anne suggested surveying participants at Reading's Household Hazardous Waste collection to determine interest level. Information regarding the facility should be included in the new edition of Hidden Treasures (hours, address, fees and list of materials they accept). Status of shed We will not be accepting fluorescent bulbs until the spring household hazardous waste collection. George is going to check on the disposal method that was used while he worked at MIT. Ted's staff attended a workshop on handling fluorescent bulbs (i.e. what to do if one breaks etc.). America Recycles Day Linda will write a letter to Judy at the Atlantic regarding SWAC setting up a table at the Atlantic. Anne suggested kicking off the fluorescent light collection as a possible event and shouring the Joanne Woodward video on cable. N illenium Party Lynda suggested putting recycling containers out for this event. We discussed the possibility of having the containers out all of the time - possibly an organization such as the Boy Scouts could empty them. The meeting was adjourned at 9:10 p.m. alp: C611
