Meeting Minutes -January 12, 2000
Attendees: Bob Brown, Jennifer Culbert, Jean Krogh, Susan Giacalone and Ted McIntire (Staff). Matthew
Costello (guest from Mass Recycle)
The meeting was called to order at 7:40 p.m. Minutes from the last meeting were approved as revised.
Matthew Costello came to the meeting to present Lynda Zarrow with an award for organizing the Best Buy
Recycled Event during Massachusetts Recycles Day 1999. Jean invited Matthew to speak during the first
part of our meeting. He filled us in on his business, E Call, which is a non-profit service that handles
recycling calls for 3351 cities/towns statewide (1-800-800-68810) including Reading. Specific recyccing
information is given when the town's zip code is entered. About half of the towns have a business sponsor.
Business sponsors have their business mentioned each time someone places a call regarding that particular
zip code. The business sponsors are also mentioned on television ads featuring Rhea Pearlman and Danny
Devito, as well as posters and magnets that are distributed to schools. The cost to the business sponsor is
reasonable - $200.00 per $10,000 residents. The cost for a Reading sponsor would be approximately
$450.00 according to Matthew. By the end ofthe year E Call will have an internet site - with two parts to
it - one for teachers, children and the general public (recyclopedia.com) and one for recycling people (i.e.
SWAC). Jean thought the Atlantic might be interested in becoming a business sponsor. Matthew's office
number is 1-800-239-2071.
Reading's Ridden Treasure Booklet:
The first subcommitee meeting to revise the booklets was held at Jennifer's house on January 7`". Jean,
Lynda, Joan, Susan and Jennifer attended. Each person took a section of the book to update/revise. The
target date for revisions is January 19, 2,000.
Ted's Report:
We received $8600.00 from MRIP. Our recycled materials tonnage increased from 943 tons to 998 tons.
Although printing assistance and bumper sticker grants were denied, we did receive a grant for consumer
education flyers. Ted ordered bumper stickers anyway for town vehicles. Fluorescent light bulb collection
began on 1/12/2000,
Ted attended a Household Hazardous Forum. Lexington charges $30.00 per 1/2 carload and $45.00 per full
carload if you are one of the eight member towns. Twenty communities in Essex County have a Household
Hazardous Waste Collection charging $19.00 per 1/2 carload and $28.50 per full carload. Ted feels we
might be able to revise our current contract to save money. Since no CRTs will be accepted after 4/l/2000,
Ted is going to try to have all components (keyboards, monitors etc.) included at our collections.
Jean would like to have a "Ted's report" on each monthly agenda.
EducationaUlnformational Quarter Hour
Jean suggested setting aside fifteen minutes each month for the purpose of education. Ted suggested we
ask Waste Management to attend a meeting. Ted is also going to ask Sharon Kashida to come in March or
Apri l (adding it would not be kept to fifteen minutes if Sharon were to come).
Other Business
Ted can be reached at emeintiref@,,ci.reading.ma.us or 942-9080 if anyone has questions regarding Hidden
Treasure updates.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:40pm.
