HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000-03-08 Solid Waste Advisory Committee MinutesSolid Waste Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes - March 8, 2000 Members Present: Bob Brown, Jean Krogh, Susan Giacalone, Joan Hoyt (late), Lynda Zarrow, Ted McIntire, Staff, Anne Mark (Former Member) 3 1. The meeting was called to order at 7:40 p.m. The minutes of the February meeting were approved with revisions. 4-0-0. Members discussed Tom Johnson resigning from committee. Bob voiced concern about his having an `official resignation' so Board of Selectmen is aware that the Solid Waste Committee is looking for prospective members. A possible new member is Steve Oston. Ted will pursue this matter. 2. Ted spoke on Override not passing and Selectmen will meet on March 14 to discuss cuts to next year's town budget. Ted discussed PAYT which, if implemented, could help recoup up to $400,000 of the budgetary shortfall. The committee must await the Select Board's decision on PAYT before proceeding with any further activity. Bob discussed PAYT aspects. Recommendations for a letter to the Board were made containing a Motion pushing for fee to pass. Moves for SWAC to approve plans and formulate plans to introduce PAYT and term it a "User Fee". Letter should be prepared to be in packets to all Board members by Friday morning. Anne suggested having a SWAC member attend and speak at Tuesday's Board Meeting if needed. Group voted on Motion to be contained in letter to Board and voted 5-0-0 to accept for Motion. 'Anne will draft initial letter and Bob will edit. 3. Sharon Kishida was not able it make this meeting but is signed up for next meeting on April 12. 4. Lynda is progressing nicely with Readings Hidden Treasiwe booklet. Almost all revisions have been made. The printing and distribution of the book was discussed but it is still too soon for final decisions on either. 5. Ted's report: He met with Sharon Kishida regarding MRIP. For the current MRIP reporting period, we are meeting all the Minimum Criteria except for 75% Access. We may be able to meet this by including some apartment buildings in the Ash Street area which collect recyclables. Household Hazardous Waste Collection will be in May. . Ted's staff has contacted four hazardous waste contractors to see if the town can negotiate a better price as well as include CRTs in the collection. He will attend a DEP meeting on Thursday. 6. Other Business: double-sided copying will be recommended for other places around town, i.e., schools. Meeting adjourned 8:50 p.m.
