1. The meeting was esL'ed to order at 7:30 p.m. The minutes of the June
meeting were Orrecle&-=4 approved wif: meisions.
2. Ted accepted nominations for Chairman of the Solid Waste Advisory

Bob nominated Susan - There was no second
Susan nominated Keith -Joan seconded.
Keith nominated Bob - Susan seconded

We voted and Bob received 1 vote ant. Keith received 4 votes. `

Chair Becker accepted riarrtinations for Vice-Chair as follows
Bob nominated Susan - Mary Ellen seconded
Susan nominated Joarr- There was no second
It was moved, seconded and voted to close nominations for Vice-Chair
We voted Susan as %'ice-Chair 4-0-1. Vice-Chair Susan accepted her new
position.
3. Ted's Report:
a. DEP Technical Assistance Graatts
In order to expand recycling to businesses anc. apartments in Reading, it
was discussed and decided to apply for Re cyc'dng(Solid Waste Planning
and Consulting Assistance this year. This wotild help prepare us for next
year when wer apply i:or the Municipally-S-_)orciored Business Recycling
Assistance. Bob moved that the Comr.rittfje apply for a Technical Gant
for Recycling Consulting Assistance. -'ed and: his office will complete
and the application, have it signed by tJre Town Manager and have it in by
the deadline of September 12, 2001.

b. Equipmen ~~tGs
We all agree that more community education and awareness is-necessary
with regard to the Pcy As You Throw subject. Ted recounneadeda,nd it
was decided to apply for Consm ier Eeuci&n Materials, Cathode Ray
Tube (CRT) Recyrlnig Grants and Cmbside Set-Out Containers in the
18 gallon size as opposed to the 13 0[an. size.
4. PAYT discussion - We discussed the :need for more community
education for this program and hew it he made available to Reading
residents, by newspaper articles and cable television. Bob suggbsted we
review the Lexington web page at

There is an MRIP meeting scheduled for July 19, 2001 at 9:30 a.m. in
Ipswich, MA.
S. New Business:
In Ted's presentation on $/21/01, in re Tone to the Instructional Motion
to the Board of Selectmen, he will atte:npi: to collect information for the
Solid Waste Advisory C-mmaittee for the 18101 meeting.
In discussing ways to cut costs for the tovA 'fed suggested elimiraat4ng
bulk waste day and r,,-ducing the curbside.eafcollection to 3 weeks per
year. It's passible that $8,000 in revenue could be generated if stickers
were purchased by if:sidents.
Ellen Mastracola. of the Crystal Garder. Club requested that a merubtr of
the Solid Waste Advisory Committee attend-flue of their meetings.
Mke reported that $10,760 has been r+.~kcej.ved from MI(P which is a new
record for the town- There is- an MR11' m meting in Ipswich on 7/19/01 at
9:30 a.m.
Keith mentioned an exticle he saw in the Chroaticle regarding the
purchasing ofnewspi int that is left over from the rolls and we discussed
ideas how this paper can be used.
Bob mentioned that lie would like to continue as the representative of the
Town of Reading SWAC and to attenr moetirigs at Ogden Martin. We all
agreed this would be an excellent idea ind appreciate his time and effort.
6. Next Meeting: The next meeting is scheduled for Wed., August 8, 2001
