Joan Hoyt, Mary Ellen Becker, Susgb aroRe A 40 Staff Liaison: Ted McIntire Meeting called to order at 7:40. Corrected minutes of the July meeting were approved and the Sept. minutes were corrected and approved as corrected. 2. Ted's report - Four different grant applications have been submitted to MRIP - curbside recycling bins, consumer education flyer, CRT recycling, and consulting fees. No decision has been made but Ted feels that approval looks good, There will be a Hazardous Waste Pick-up in Stoneham on Nov.10. Curbside leaf collection will occur in Reading on the weeks of Nov. 12 and Nov. 26. The compost site will be open on Sundays in Nov., from noon till 5 p.m. in addition to the regular Fri., Sat., and Mon. hours. The town has a new CRT recycler. A walk in dumpster is at the DPW and will be picked up when full and replaced. Ted hopes that this will alleviate the backlog of CRT's. 3. Nov. 15 is Mass. Recycles Day. A subcommittee was formed to meet and discuss proposing a supplement for the Advocate containing recycling information. The Advocate wanted $500 for costs. Joan had nice graphics available. Bob was thinking about Reading's haulers submitting articles. Tom Feely of the Chronicle was willing to run either a series of articles or do a full page spread. Ann could be asked to do an article on the textile collection. And excerpts from Readings Hidden Treasures could be chosen. 4. The seventh annual Environmentally Preferred Products workshop scheduled for Oct 30`h is geared for the large user. Ted and Mike will attend. The event is at the Centrum in Worchester. 5. The Crystal Garden Club that had scheduled a meeting to discuss composting on Sept. 12 has not as yet rescheduled. 6. Mary Ellen shared the information about Stoneham's and Wakefield's enforcement person. Each town has a person who checks for bins and looks to see what is in the bins. There is no rummaging thru the trash to see if recycle items are thrown in the regular trash. However, neither town had any evidence to support the person based on tonnage. Ted suggested a call to Sharon Kishida. 7. We had a discussion of a name change. We are to come to the next meeting with words that will correctly cover the scope of the committees responsibilities. If we come up with a name, then a letter to the Board of Selectmen would be the next step. Ted suggested a contest, but a letter to the Selectmen would happen first in that scenario. 8. Bob had been on a Tour of the Middleton Swap Shop. The question of a place in Reading and a person to run it came up. 9. Bob also attended a tour of the Topsfield Transfer station. This idea may have some relevance to Reading when the PAYT issue comes forward again in a couple of years. 10. The Textile Drive is this weekend, Oct. 13. 11. The meeting adjourned at 8:55.
