Solid Waste Advisory Committee
Meeting Minutes - November 14, 2001 J3
Members Present: Mary Ellen Becker, Keith Becker, Bob Brown, Susan Giacalone,
Michael O'Halloran (Staff Liaison).
1. Meeting came to order at 7:38 p.m. Minutes from last meeting ammended and
accepted.
2. Michael O'Halloran spoke on the Hazardous Waste Collection that was held on
the past Saturday. All went well. The regular tire collection could not take place
due to the fact that the container to hold tires could not have been removed from
Stoneham High School right away. Leaf pick-up will be this week and the week
of November 26. Then the Compost Center closes November 30.
3. Michael and Ted attended a vendor fair on buying recycled products. Items such
as benches, carpeting, and autos, were on display. The market for this type of a
fair is municipalities, schools, and large businesses.
4. Keith had submitted the video on recycling and RCTV said it would be running
repeatedly this week.
5. New Business: some of the information regarding businesses in the Reading
Hidden Treasures book have changed. Some corrections will have to take place.
Michael O'Halloran will see that updates are put on the web site. We will break
down the book into sections and all try to make corrections. Mary Ellen will
generate a file on her home computer and will take updates and keep them until
the day of a re-printing. Keith will be talking to Ted about some of the changes.
6. Name Change: We will be talking about this in future meetings and taking
suggestions from all. Susan will contact Gail Wood, our Board of Selectmen
Liaison about attending one of our upcoming meetings to give us some pointers
on this.
7. Bob attended a Covanta meeting earlier in the month. He sent his notes to all via
e-mail.
8. Bob made a motion from our committee to the Board of Selectmen that they
approve Take Back. Mary Ellen seconded motion. The motion was carried by
vote 4-0. The motions states the following: Move that Reading Solid Waste
Advisory Committee recommend that the Reading Board of Selectmen approve
the resolution supporting producers take back of Cathode Ray Tubes, Electronics
and Household Hazardous Products.
9. Meeting was adjourned at 9:10 p.m.
