Solid Waste Advisory Committee'
Meeting Minutes March 13, 2002 C, C,

1. The meeting was called to order at 7:37 p.m. The minutes of the February
meeting were corrected and approved with revisions.
2. Mike's (Ted's) Report:
a. There have been problems with the vendor who picks up the
fluorescent bulbs. There hasn't been a pick up in some time so the
shed is full. Mike is working on the problem.
b. Award letters have been received regarding grants.
c. There is a meeting on March 22, 2002, with John Merritt regarding
a grant the Town of Reading has received. This grant will go
towards including businesses and condominiums in the recycling
program.
3. Planning Our Objectives: Earth Day
a. The library display is in the planning stages. Calls have been made
to the Reading Library and Joan will follow up with dates for set
up. Joan and Susan will set it up the week prior to Earth Day.
b. Susan and Bob have delivered the paper grocery bags to the two
participating elementary schools, Joshua Eaton (300 bags) and
Birch Meadow (300 bags). The students will decorate them with
an Earth Day message and they will be completed by April 5,
2002. Susan and Bob will pick them up and bring them back to the
Atlantic so they can be used for customers' groceries. Thank you
notes to each school will be sent thanking them for their efforts.
c. Susan has arranged with Wayside Bazaar to donate a child's gift
for the clean up day drawing.
4. New Business:
a. Matt Costello, Executive Director of E-Call presented Bob Brown
with a Volunteer of the Year Award for 2001 for the extensive
amount of time and energy he offers. Mr. Costello spoke about the
increase by the DEP in paperwork and requirements of towns. As
a result moral is down and the number of volunteers has decreased.
b. Reading's last Bulk Waste pick up is scheduled for the week of
May 13, 2002 through May 17, 2002, in that this service has been
discontinued due to budget cuts.
c. The compost center re-opens on April 1, 2002. It will be open on
Sundays from 12:00 Noon to 5:00 p.m. only for the month of
April. It will be open on Mondays and Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to
2:30 p.m. for April and May. At this time it is scheduled to be
open on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from April until
November but the schedule may be cut back at the end of June.
d. There will be a curbside leaf pick up on April 29, 2002. There will
no longer be a leaf pick up in the Fall due to budget cuts.
e. Christmas Tree pick up has been discontinued completely due to
budget cuts.
f. Street sweeping has begun.
g. Hazardous Waste collection is scheduled for May 18, 2002. This
year tires can be dropped off for $2.50 per tire ($3.50 with a rim)
5. Next Meeting: The next meeting is scheduled for Wed., April 10, 2002 @
7:30 p.m.
