Meeting Minutes for February 11, 2002
Members present: Keith Becker, Susan Giacalone, and Bob Brown, Mary Ellen
Becker
Staff Liaison Present: Ted McIntire
Call to order. Minutes for January were approved.
2. Ted's report:
The big topic for Ted's report is the continuing budget cutting. Waste
Management has agreed to postpone current payments for trash ($60,000) until
05-06 for securing the two-year extension to their current contract. Reading
currently pays $52/ton in tipping fees to Waste Management/Covanta.
Bob would like to see Atlantic Waste Systems, our current recycling hauler,
approached and asked to include #3 thru #7 plastics in curbside pickup.
Ted has proposed to the selectmen that $500,000 could be "saved" if trash
collection was PAYT. Much to everyone's surprise the idea was not immediately
dismissed.
After July 1, if Ted is not able to attend the SWAC meeting, Mike will not be able
due to budget cuts.
3. John Meritt had a meeting with the Reading/North Reading Chamber of
Commerce on Nov. 6th. There was no information about the meeting or the
topics discussed.
4. Because we are now meeting on Tues., a member for the committee should
contact Gail Wood, both before and after our meetings for updates.
5. Earth Day was discussed. We plan to do the bag project again,'this year
including all schools. Bob will again work with Birch Meadow. Susan will take
Joshua Eaton. Mary Ellen will contact Killam. We will ask Judith to cover
Barrows. Mary Ellen will contact the library and set up the display table. Her
ideas are to show what we recycle and where it goes. Ideas for articles to run in
the paper are needed. Members should look for appropriate topics and bring in
articles for review and submission to the local papers. Bob reported that the
Stream Team is having a picnic at Lob's Pond on Earth Day.
6. The date for the next meeting is March 11 and we adjourned at 9:20.
